Experienced economist Hamish Fitchett has joined Colliers as the new National Director of Research & Economics.

Having most recently worked at the Reserve Bank of New Zealand for the past 18 months following two years in London, he brings extensive expertise in economic modelling and forecasting. His consultancy work overseas was predominantly focused on economic regulation and demand forecasting for leading corporate entities.

Originally from Dunedin, Fitchett studied at the University of Otago where he completed a Master of Economics with Distinction and also holds a Bachelor of Science. He later earned a Master of Science in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2022, where he received the Excellence in Macroeconomics Award.

He began his career at the Reserve Bank in 2019 before returning for a second stint after his time offshore. While at the Reserve Bank he had an extensive research portfolio, publishing pieces on business surveys and statistical testing methods.

He also analysed the dynamics of the New Zealand housing market compared to other countries around the world and has published joint research with the Reserve Bank of Australia and the US Federal Reserve.

His studies in London included a focus on international economics and he has previously published research looking at the economic drivers of international migration flows.

The Colliers Research team regularly produces vacancy surveys across the industrial, office, and retail sectors in key markets around New Zealand as well as regional reports. They do specialist consultancy work and deliver a monthly research report based on relevant industry trends. Their work also includes industry presentations, panel events and discussions, and board briefings with clients.

Fitchett says having the opportunity to join a firm with a major global presence was highly appealing given his time working overseas.

"I am excited to have joined Colliers and am ready to get stuck into some new datasets, unlocking value for our clients, and being immersed in such a key industry that contributes to New Zealand s economy.

"The country is set to go through an interesting period in the coming years that will hopefully see greater economic activity driven by lower interest rates and strong migration.

"There is also the backdrop of global economic tension currently at play and it will be fascinating to see how that creates opportunities within the business community that will filter through to the commercial property market."

Fitchett is replacing property industry veteran Ian Little who is retiring after spending the past five years at Colliers where he developed a reputation for valuable research insights and informative presentations at industry events.

Charles Cooper, Auckland Managing Director at Colliers, says Fitchett will be a strong addition to the business and will have a national focus.

"Hamish has an incredibly impressive background in economics and forecasting and we know he will be an outstanding fit for the team. He will be able to provide in-depth information for our clients based on his strong data and econometrics skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving expertise, alongside his communication and presentation ability," Cooper says.

"Being able to leverage Hamish's knowledge adds another layer of expertise to our business and further enhances the offering we can deliver.

"On behalf of Colliers we'd also like to wish Ian well in retirement and thank him for his contribution to the business during what has been a unique period for the property industry. His deep understanding of the property market meant he was able to provide industry-leading information and was highly sought-after for presentations and insights regarding the sector."
