This family-friendly Remuera pocket holds a special place in the hearts of the owners of 142A Upland Road, and they purchased this particular property around 10 years ago.

“It was close to Benson Road and we used to live on Benson Road – the home the kids were little in is just over the back fence,” one of them explains.

“After Benson Road we built a house in Portland Road and then once the kids were at university, we were home alone again. So we decided to move from the big house into a smaller one in a neighbourhood we knew and loved. It was sort of like coming home.”

She says they thoroughly enjoy the multi-generational feel of the local community and the special lifestyle it offers for everyone.

“The lovely thing about the area is that it’s got older people, younger people and children. We’re also just a hop, skip and a jump from the Benson Road shops, which has two cafes and a restaurant, so we head up there for coffee.”

Along with the stellar location, the huge appeal of this classic weatherboard home lies in its single-level floor plan and fabulous indoor-outdoor flow. Offering four bedrooms and three bathrooms, it suits families of all sizes and life stages.

It’s been beautifully expanded and upgraded over time, shares the owner. “It started life in the late 50s, early 60s as a modest bungalow and then in 1985, Ron Sang did some lovely alterations that incorporated negative detailing and raising the height of the doors.”

The following owner then reconfigured the interior to a more sensible layout that was conducive to practical modern living.

“The kitchen is the centre and core of the house, then the living area opens up to the fabulous backyard which has a huge avocado tree.”

Sunny decks are framed with lush, level lawns and landscaped gardens that offer enough space to enjoy, but aren’t a burden in terms of upkeep. Four bedrooms are serviced by three bathrooms and the layout works well, with the current owners utilising one of the bedrooms as a study.

A move is now on the cards. “We’re heading to Point Wells because our family is up there, we have two young grandchildren and we want to be available for them.”

Bayleys agent Steve Koerber says: “This isn’t just a courtyard, it’s a proper backyard and that’s the key here.” Photo / Supplied

Steve and Nila Koerber, from Bayleys, are marketing the property and Steve says that this is a fantastic option for buyers after single-level living.

“It’s also got an amazing aspect and flow to the yard – even with two-storey homes it’s difficult to find that perfect indoor-outdoor flow. Being single level and having that makes it really, really unique. This isn’t just a courtyard, it’s a proper backyard and that’s the key here. It’s also been modernised in recent years, so it’s a great package.”

Steve says the buyers could be a family, or empty nesters that have sold their big family home and want something a little more manageable, but still enjoy great space and a lovely garden.
