Twenty-one years in the same house gave Jo and Steve Sharp enough pause for thought about how exactly to tackle the renovation of their Horace Massey home, which is now listed for sale.
With the best intentions to keep the home’s timeless character intact, the couple have sensitively brought 45 Upland Road in Remuera, Auckland into the modern age while retaining all of the timeless Massey charm.
“The character immediately appealed, it had such good bones, it needed work, but I could look past that and see its immense potential, it also had the loveliest street appeal,” describes Jo Sharp.
The home, which has a ratings valuation of $4.9 million, has retained a formal dining and a formal sitting room, contrasted with a casual and open plan lounge and kitchen. Smaller rooms were made larger, and the renovation introduced a good measure of flow throughout.

The couple, who bought the house in 2001 for $1.37m, were acutely aware of their home’s architectural pedigree, and subsequently took great measures to retain the building’s traditional features.

“When we did the extension, we often told the builder we wanted an exact copy of the front of the home. The skirting and ceiling detail was replicated precisely, we sourced identical wooden flooring from a demolition yard – we dedicated a lot of attention to detail, so you can’t tell where the old ends and the new begins,” Sharp says.
Panelled walls, traditional lighting and ceiling details are complemented by the earthy hues and texture introduced by the couple. The home’s black hardwood exterior, topped with terracotta tiles, shutter framed windows, stained glass windows, French doors and fireplaces produce a welcoming and picture book effect.
“It has been the most amazing family home; we have absolutely adored it. Each room is lived in, it’s comfortable, but what I love the most is how tranquil and peaceful the property is.”

The outdoor area has been significantly landscaped with tall and immaculate hedges ensuring privacy. A perfectly flat lawn, a pool, spa and outdoor fireplace confirm the space as an entertainer’s retreat, directly flowing out from the home’s designer shaker style kitchen and living area.
The master bedroom has its own wing. Vaulted ceilings, a gas fireplace, walk-in wardrobe and a contemporary ensuite ensure the space is its own retreat. The room extends to a balcony overlooking the garden and pool area. A further three double bedrooms on the same level provide ample space for the rest of the family and guests.
Within a short walk to the Benson Road shops, Orakei Reserve and Rangitoto Reserve, the property’s location is second to none.

Nicholas Dallyn, who is marketing the property with Ross Tierney, says, “This is an extremely special home, designed by Horace Massey.
“Its had a series of empathetic renovations by the current owners that has brought the amenities into the 21st century. It’s quiet, private and secure. It’s a character home lover’s dream property.”
