Mike van der Putten has moved to the Colliers Capital Markets team, returning to the division where he began his career with the company in 2010.

Having spent the past 12 years working in the office leasing sector, van der Putten’s intricate knowledge of the leasing market and how to add value to properties will provide another layer of expertise to the capital markets team.

After completing a Bachelor of Property at the University of Auckland, van der Putten joined Colliers 15 years ago as an executive assistant in the capital markets team when they were known as the corporate and institutional sales division.

He worked in that role for three years before moving to brokerage as part of the office leasing team where he specialised in the Auckland city fringe and southern corridor.

He has brokered significant deals with corporate and government clients, including Heartland Bank, Hato Hone St John, and the Ministry of Social Development, among others. The largest deal he worked on was KiwiRail’s 25-year lease in Auckland’s Central Park commercial precinct in Ellerslie.

“Joining capital markets is an outstanding opportunity and I am looking forward to getting stuck in and working alongside the most respected Brokers in the industry,” van der Putten says.

“I believe the knowledge and skills I have developed in the leasing sector will be hugely valuable to the team and I am excited about the prospect of delivering the best possible results for our clients.”

The Colliers capital markets team has a proven track record of brokering high-profile real estate transactions across New Zealand. They deal with listed entities, high-net-worth individuals, sovereign wealth funds, and private offshore investors.

Some of their most notable recent deals include the $104 million sale of the former Finance Centre in Auckland CBD, the $535m sale of Auckland office tower Fifty Albert that settled in November 2024, and multiple large-scale development land sales.

Led by national director Peter Herdson, who has more than 30 years’ experience at Colliers, the team includes Brokers Richard Kirke, Blair Peterken, and Josh Coburn, as well as two support staff.

Herdson says it’s great to welcome van der Putten back to the team as they continue to broaden their capabilities.

“When Mike joined Colliers he came highly recommended to us and he has proven himself as a market leader with an exceptional work ethic. His knowledge of the property sector and connections to key clients will be hugely beneficial to our team as we continue to grow,” Herdson says.

Herdson says the capital markets team recently sold the office building at 656 Great South Road in Auckland, a transaction that was made possible after van der Putten helped secure new tenants for the property on long-term lease agreements that boosted the tenancy profile of the asset.

“It’s clear that Mike will add considerable value to our team as his expertise was pivotal in this deal that resulted in a great outcome for vendor and purchaser.”
