“We loved this house so much when we saw the listing,” says Collette, who purchased the property with husband Robert in 2021.

They’d been living on the opposite side of Remuera Road and felt they might enjoy a change of scenery over on the northern slopes. In fact, buyers’ desire for the attractive lifestyle it promised was so strong the auction date was brought forward and the couple soon held the keys.

Originally built around 30 years ago, 2/13 Walton Street had been completely transformed by the previous owner and was essentially a brand new home, architecturally designed by award-winning David Strachan who is known for his clean lines and clever innovations – and reconstructed to a very high standard.

One of the home’s most appealing features is the semi self-contained space downstairs, where two bedrooms lie adjacent to a combined kitchen and lounge with a bathroom next door.

“That’s been really great when we’ve had friends or family to stay because they have quiet and privacy,” says Collette.

Also on this level is an internal access double garage, with plenty of extra off-street parking on the paved driveway.

Upstairs, the main living area is cool and contemporary, bathed in natural light streaming through large, double-glazed windows. The kitchen is smart and stylish with high-quality appliances plus loads of storage, and it opens to the balcony outside for morning coffees.

A sunny master suite is very well-appointed with two walk-in wardrobes in addition to the ensuite bathroom and the second bedroom upstairs would be perfect for a baby or young children. As it happens, the couple have young grandchildren who love splashing around in summer.

“So, while we didn’t need to do anything major to the house itself, Collette and I did refurbish the pool area and jazz it up a bit, in 2025,” says Robert.

Collette and Robert found their home very easy to live in. White paintwork and shutters add to the sense of space and the oak flooring and luxurious wool carpet provide comfort.

The couple are keen travellers, so the lock-up-and-leave aspect of the property has suited them very well, but now the time to move on has arrived.

“We’ll miss the local Victoria Avenue shops and cafes, and I’ve liked being able to walk to my hairdresser, but we’re spending more time at our Omaha property, so we really don’t need a big house in town,” says Collette.

Steve Koerber, who is marketing the home, says that big family dwellings in this neighbourhood are always sought after by buyers.

“This is a perfect example, with lots of room for everybody and good separation. It’s in the double grammar zone and surrounded by excellent private schools – and of course, Remuera Village and Newmarket are both just a short distance away.”

He says that the owners are very realistic in terms of sale price expectations.
