The April sale of the Brent Hulena-designed house on Park Avenue, in Auckland’s Takapuna, comes just five months after Haddleton sold the trophy home he owned next door for $15.7m.

The combined value of both deals is $28.2m – just above RV.

Haddleton had decided to sell both homes after the death of his wife and business partner Sue, in 2022, and the death of their son Matthew a year later.

He told OneRoof this week: “Life’s journey involves many chapters. The sales of these two houses mark the end of one chapter and the beginning of a new one. As always, bittersweet.”

The Haddletons had planned to bowl the two beachside houses, and a third on neighbouring William Street, and replace them with a large estate, designed by their friend, architect Greg Noble.

The couple had hired Noble to build their French chateau on Park Avenue 20 years ago after they bought the site for $3.8m. They acquired the Hulena-designed home next door in 2019 for $11.75m and the five-bedroom house to the rear on William Street for $5m a year later.

Haddleton put the Park Avenue homes on the market for sale at the start of last year with New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty agent Aaron Reid, initially as a combined listing but then separately.

He told OneRoof last year that his farm north of Auckland had become his “centre of gravity” since the deaths of his wife and son. “I’m glad we didn’t do that [mansion] for a whole host of reasons, not least just understanding the sensitivity of those who have money and those who don’t. It would have just been obscene to have that on the beach,” he said.

He confirmed to OneRoof this week that the William Street house, which had been quietly for sale with the Park Avenue homes, was no longer on the market.

Reid declined to comment on the Park Avenue sales, but OneRoof understands they were picked up by different buyers. At the start of last year, Reid told OneRoof that the properties had attracted interest from America, the UK, Singapore, and Dubai.

The sales prices are the North Shore’s highest in the last 12 months, beating the $11.58m sale of a trophy home on Brett Avenue, in Takapuna, in December.
