Welcome to Mount St Joseph, a landmark estate set on approximately 1.18 hectares in sought-after St Johns Hill. Established gardens and mature trees create a peaceful setting, with sweeping views over Whanganui, the river and the surrounding countryside. Originally an elegant private residence, Mount St Joseph became home to the Sisters of St Joseph in 1949. It served for many years as a novitiate before becoming Te Punanga o Hohepa, the Josephite Retreat Centre. Its history of reflection and hospitality remains evident today.
The substantial main building has an approximate footprint of 790 m2. Across two levels, high ceilings, generous rooms and heritage detailing convey an impressive sense of scale. The ground floor comprises offices, interview rooms and two substantial meeting rooms, accommodating everything from private appointments to larger group gatherings. A main kitchen and open-plan owners’ dining area support the property’s accommodation and hospitality functions. Secure garaging provides space for four vehicles. The entire upper level is devoted to accommodation and is accessible by stairwell or lift.
It includes an apartment, two self-contained flats and guest rooms, each enjoying panoramic views across the surrounding countryside. Carefully maintained over time, Mount St Joseph offers its next custodian a range of possibilities, including boutique accommodation, a retreat or hospitality venue, community use or a private residence suited to multigenerational living, subject to the necessary council approvals and heritage considerations. Properties of this scale, setting and history are seldom available. Contact us to arrange a viewing of Mount St Joseph. Offers and enquiries over $1,500,000 + GST if any.
