Bayleys listing agent Nic Mayhew, a former Harlequins and Blues rugby union player, told OneRoof his team, “Team Mayhew”, sold the five-bedroom retreat on Queen Street, in Auckland’s Northcote Point, a week before the sale deadline.

“We received an early offer, and that turned into two very quickly.” Both offers came from buyers moving over the bridge, one from Herne Bay, the other from Grey Lynn.

“A lot of people we’ve been selling to have been on that side,” Mayhew said. “It seems to be a bit of a trend. People want to stay close to the city, but get really, really good value on the Point ... for just a bridge. And it’s a good little community.

“We intentionally, with our marketing, pushed it hard to people over the other side of the bridge.”

Mayhew declined to reveal the exact sale price but said it was more than the Reinsfields paid two years ago. “We would expect probably sideways movement from when they bought, so it was nice to achieve a better result.”

The Reinsfields told OneRoof in April that they were selling their Queen Street property to move closer to their family, explaining that they had bought two homes nearby and planned to create a multi-generational compound.

The couple scooped up the Queen Street home in 2024, after it was listed for sale by the outgoing CEO of Chorus. Danya said they had flown in from Sydney to bid at the auction.

Ken had been appointed chairman of the Warriors and they had just become grandparents.

“Ken’s daughter, my stepdaughter, Sacha, had her first child, and it just felt like Sydney was too far away,” Danya told OneRoof. “So we made the decision to move back.”

The couple had previously lived in Ponsonby and Herne Bay while in New Zealand, but Sacha was living in Birkenhead and wanted them close. “We were able to find this absolute hidden gem [on] Queen Street, and we’ve absolutely loved it here. We anticipated that this would be the home where we raised our grandchildren and made beautiful memories.”

However, the real estate market had different ideas, and when two neighbouring homes came up for sale, the couple pounced. “We had a unique opportunity to secure [the two homes]. We have always talked as a family about wanting to have a family compound, and this has just made it a reality,” Danya said. “The plan is that the family will live in one, and Ken and I will renovate and live in the other.”

Danya told OneRoof that both she and Ken loved Northcote Point. “Everything. It’s so quiet – and I mean that in a good way.

“We’ve got the ferry at the end of the street, and there just seems to be this upswelling of new life coming into the [neighbourhood]. It’s attracting a lot of younger families, and it’s bringing a lot more energy.

“You’ve got that Ponsonby feel in this little enclave. And everything’s so close to the water. We just love it.”

Danya said it takes the couple just seven minutes to get to the city. She works from home four days a week, and Ken tends to travel to the Warriors’ office at Mt Smart Stadium on his Triumph Bonneville motorcycle.

“We’re both keen motorcyclists, so if you’ve got a motorbike, it’s not an issue. He’s out there multiple times in a week,” she said.

The couple are, of course, Warriors fans and watch all the games. “Win or lose, it’s always going to be an exciting game, watching the Wahs. I’m very excited for this season.”

Mayhew told OneRoof in April that there was a limited supply of large character family homes in Northcote Point. “They are still more affordable than nearby Herne Bay and Westmere. We are finding that a lot of our buyers are coming over the bridge as they see better value on the Point.

“People love the community feel, easy access to the CBD and motorways heading north and south. It’s an amazing lifestyle.”
