Owners Steven and Michael will always hold a special place in their hearts for 24 Summer Street, the classic light, bright, gracious and fully renovated villa they bought in 2018.
“We liked it immediately,” says Steven. “This is a lovely quiet street, and our neighbours are all very nice – there’s a real community spirit here.”
Constructed in the early 1900s the villa has been home to many families over the decades since, moving seamlessly into the 21st century thanks to thoughtful alterations over time.
Beautiful kauri floorboards have been lovingly restored by previous owners and stunning original tiled fireplaces still feature in the master bedroom and the formal lounge – which is alternatively a fourth bedroom.

“We especially like the open-plan kitchen, living and dining area because it’s a great layout and really practical, functional and modern,” says Steven.
The master bedroom has an ensuite, which is very convenient, and the main bathroom is a generous size.
“We welcomed our first son here and had great fun decorating his bedroom,” he adds.
Most of the décor throughout the interior is in soft natural colours imparting an almost Scandinavian vibe. Gas central heating and HRV make for cool summers and warm winters.

Steven and Michael’s section is fully fenced with extensive decking for relaxing, entertaining or soaking in the spa pool while the landscaped garden is well-established with lush lawn, mature olive trees and sub-tropical palms.
The yard is very private – despite having neighbours nearby, and enjoys a glimpse of the Waitakeres in the distance.
While there’s no garage – as with many Ponsonby properties – there is an off-street parking spot and Steven says that the family tends to walk practically everywhere in the neighbourhood.
“Ponsonby Road is just a few steps away and we like to start our days with coffee at Bambina or at The Tinted Rose in the other direction. There are plenty of supermarkets around us and lots of parks too, which is great for children and dogs. Actually, we really are spoilt for choice.”

Bayleys agent Cristina Casares says: “It’s actually my second time marketing it and I love the sunny interior.” Photo / Supplied
Steven and Michael have maintained the house diligently and the exterior has recently been repainted. They and their family are moving a few streets away because they need more space, but Steven says he and Michael will definitely take fond memories with them.
Cristina Casares sells a lot of property in this popular part of Auckland and says that 24 Summer Street is a perfect residence for lovers of period dwellings, with its high ceilings, light-filled interior and generous bedrooms.
“It’s actually my second time marketing it and I love the sunny interior. There are windows all along the western side of the extension so you can watch the sun setting in the evenings.
“Obviously, being so close to Ponsonby is a huge attraction too.”
