It’s no secret that the Queenstown district is home to some of the country’s finest properties and this much-loved family estate represents a very rare opportunity, occupying over 21 hectares with a private 500-metre laneway, gated entry, ponds plus well-established trees and other plantings.
Bought by current owners Dean and Lisa in 2012, they extended and totally rebuilt the house in 2017, as well as adding an enviable four-car garage.
Lisa says that because of the region’s weather extremes – hot with all-day sun in summer and occasional snow on the ground in winter – careful thought was given to the way the house would actually function.
“In summer we tend to be in the kitchen and lounge opening fully to the outdoors, then in winter we use the smaller lounge and open fire where we took the windows up to the ceiling to have the very best views of Coronet Peak.”

76 Hunter Road in Speargrass Flat, Queenstown, is for sale by negotiation. The five-bedroom, four-bathroom property has a 2021 RV of $9.48 million and, according to OneRoof data, last changed hands in 2021 for $4.1m.
Although the house is large, at 500sqm, it feels surprisingly intimate with plenty of living spaces, and Lisa says that the media room was especially popular with their three children, who are now young adults.

“While we have fabulous privacy, everything is so close. We can mountain bike from home on trails just down the road. In winter we can literally be skiing in 25 minutes, and in summer there is tennis outside on the court, golf at nearby resort courses, water skiing in Lake Wakatipu and one of our daughters kept her pony in the paddock. Luckily the pony club is just down the road!
“Being in Dalefield, it’s only a 10-minute drive into Arrowtown with some of the region’s best restaurants, and 15 minutes to an international airport. It’s also a very safe community. Where else in the world do you get all of that?”
Lisa says as with most homes, the kitchen (complete with butler’s pantry) is its beating heart. “It’s the most fantastic place for entertaining.”
The home’s bedrooms are all very generous and the bathrooms are cool and contemporary. On the lower level is an enormous 500-bottle wine cellar, along with storage and a ski drying room.
Lisa says that the children attended Arrowtown Primary and Wakatipu High School, and weekend visits home from Otago University are just a three-hour drive.
“This property is just a bit too big for the two of us now, but I’m sure we’re not going to be moving far away as we really love it here.”

Listing agent Matt Finnigan, from New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty, says that 76 Hunter Road is a rare find – a modern, private, ridgeline property with unmatched views of both ski fields and the Crown range, which will be much coveted. There is nothing else like it.
“The topography is amazing – the way you have the landscaped top terrace with the house, ponds and tennis court then the lower terrace for horses and cattle. There is consent for three additional lots on the lower terrace which offers a new owner plenty of options.
“People could subdivide and sell off, build for extended family or staff, or hold as a landbank in what is a highly sought after location.”
Finnigan notes that even with this subdivision complete, the existing home would still enjoy an almost 20-hectare title.
