Houses which have stayed in the same family for decades tend to have interesting stories and this spectacular north-west facing harbourside property – its views framed by iconic pohutukawa – is certainly no exception.

The family explains that their father grew up in Point Chevalier and as a child he lived on a farm in Monaghan Ave, Mt Albert.

Because the motorway hadn’t yet been built, the two suburbs – which are effectively separate today – were basically all one.

“As a child Dad spent a lot of time with family friends at 53 St Michaels Ave, swimming, sailing and fishing in this secret seaside spot that many Aucklanders are still unaware of.”

When the chance arose to buy a house in the street, their parents eagerly seized the opportunity and purchased a home just two doors down.

Years later, they were offered the chance to acquire No 53 and the decision came easily. Drawn not only by the opportunity itself but also by the deep sentimental value the place held, they agreed without hesitation.

According to OneRoof data, the four-bedroom, three-bathroom home with a current RV of $4.07m was bought in 1988 for $300,000.

The family expressed that they would love for the land and home to remain just as they are, preserving the character and memories held within its walls.

However, they are also realistic and fully aware that the house has aged over time and renovations.

They understand it is quite possible that the next owners of this rare property will one day build their own dream home, a place for new memories to be made and cherished by the next family.

“Dad has lived here for most of his life and still absolutely loves it. To have all this land and a private beach just 10 minutes from the city is something truly remarkable.”

They add by saying that the family always kept a boat down by the water, in a quaint, rustic boatshed, with the rare privilege of being able to launch it and be catching fish within 10 minutes on the inner harbour.

“Our father loved being involved in the local boating and sailing community and our mother was a very keen gardener, and she appreciated having so much land for growing her beautiful roses.”
