On the doorstep of Tawharanui Regional Park this once-in-a-lifetime property has a private beach with all-tide boat launching access, native bush, parklike grounds and panoramic sea views of Kawau Bay and beyond.

It’s been the treasured getaway for the current Auckland-based owners for the past 34 years and has provided a stunning location for three family weddings, with a recent one having a marquee set up on the tennis court and views out to Mansion House.

When the family bought the property in 1992 it was rather run-down but exactly what they were looking for. A place with a private beach and some land not too far from the city. And now with the new motorway and a tar sealed road to Tawharanui, getting there is even quicker. Matakana with its restaurants, cinema and market, is only 10 minutes away.

In the early days they farmed and leased additional land for cattle and sheep and over the years spent much on fencing and planting – thousands of native trees through the gullies – which is home to a tranquil bush sanctuary of kauri, pohutukawa and puriri and a spring-fed dam. Here the birdlife is abundant and includes bellbirds, tui, kākā and parakeets, and pāteke ducks enjoy living in the dam.

The dam feeds directly into the ocean which also attracts lots of bait fish – mullet and kahawai. Easy access to the beach is alongside the gully by road and there are several walking tracks. Here you’ll find three carports with adequate parking, a grassed area for relaxation, and a private pebble and sand beach.

“There’s a rock island beyond the beach that’s fun to swim, kayak and to paddleboard to. We are often visited by dolphins, close to the beach. And then there is Tawharanui a kilometre away if you want to swim in the surf or sit in the shade of a pohutukawa tree, walk the many trails – so we have the best of both worlds.

“It’s paradise up here.”

The property has three dwellings including the main house, a converted fertiliser bunker with three bedrooms and one bathroom and a two-bedroom, one-bathroom cottage which is attached to the woolshed. The woolshed also has a games room with two bedrooms and a bathroom.

For the first 12 years the family stayed in “the bunker” before building their dream summer house. Their children and their families stay here on holidays and the lawn out front is great for a game of cricket or kicking a ball around.

The main four-bedroom, three-bathroom house overlooks the ocean and has an adjacent tennis court, spa pool with a view and outdoor fireplace as well as a partly covered outdoor courtyard and space for entertaining. It was designed by an eco-architect together with the owners to fully make use of sun, views and privacy.

The amazing views from the house look at the north part of Coromandel, Kawau Island and Mahurangi Peninsula to Algies Bay. The Sky Tower can be seen at night and the sunsets are incredible.

Since having the property, the couple have built and upgraded all the dwellings and driveways significantly. There are also several orchards on the property providing a bounty of olives, table grapes, lemons, grapefruit, figs, plums, peaches and blueberries. There’s also a water bore which they’ve used during summer water shortages.

The current owners also planted a “test” vineyard in 2004 with syrah grapes with the intention of establishing a commercial vineyard on the property’s former airstrip.

The economics didn’t work so they kept the “test” vineyard with the 100 vines from which they produce and make wine in the woolshed winery for their own enjoyment each vintage. Now with all their children grown up, the couple are giving up the property for succession reasons as well as looking to downsize and enjoy more travel.

“We’ve had a wonderful 34 years here. It’s been fantastic for the family and now it’s waiting for another family to enjoy,” they say.

This is an outstanding property, says John Greenwood, of Bayleys.

“It’s also private and peaceful, only an hour from Auckland CBD, has elevated views all the way back to the Sky Tower. And with its own totally private swimming cove and easy launching for a Sealegs, this is a paradise for all water activities, and the fishing is great!”

1024 Takatu Road in Matakana, Rodney, is on the market for sale by negotiation.
