Long-time North Shore residents John and Loraine had half a dozen very good reasons for seeking the perfect family home when they were looking in and around the Mairangi Bay area – 21 years ago.

Their luck was in, and despite needing a few tweaks, 69A Kowhai Road – just a 600m walk to the beach – offered plenty of space for the couple and their six children, the youngest of whom was just two at the time.

“It was originally built mid last century and is solid as a rock, with the improvements to the house over the years matching the quality of the original artisan workmanship.

“It’s a true executive family home with real character, like the original matai floorboards,” says John.

Over the years, as their brood grew up, the couple made various changes –which added significant value. The kitchen, dining and living areas are vast and covered decks – some with louvres – can be used in all seasons.

The kitchen and bathrooms have recently been refurbished to a very high standard, and the house offers three generous double bedrooms on the second level.

When John and Loraine needed time out, the exclusive top floor master suite with leafy views and a peek of the sea, a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite, was their sanctuary.

“We also developed what’s effectively a self-contained apartment, including the fifth bedroom, on the ground floor,” explains Loraine. “It has its own kitchen and combined studio-style bed and living area, plus a bathroom, so it was perfect when we had people to stay.”

John and Loraine also added the pool and spa complex and developed the garden further.

“Several palms were already here, which we added to alongside extensive landscaping, predominantly with natives. The plants we added are all well-established now and very easy care. We often get told the place feels like a tropical resort – especially with all the native birdlife,” says Loraine.

John says that the very versatile property, which also boasts its own bushwalk and a playhouse built in the trees, has been the venue for dozens of happy family occasions and corporate events.

“One of our sons was married here a couple of years ago, with a marquee on the lawn which worked well. The gardens were in full bloom making it a splendid setting for the bride and groom and their guests. It was a great occasion!”

Gavin Roberts, who is marketing this impressive property, says that it lies in excellent school zones and demonstrates thoughtful use of space for living – both inside and out – as well as huge storage areas, and lots of off-street parking – in addition to the oversized double garage.

“It’s hard to describe what’s on offer here because I’ve never seen anything quite like it – the vendors’ attention to detail is just so impressive!”

With their children now all moved out, John and Loraine know they can no longer do justice to such a large property but they’re going to miss it – and the neighbourhood.

“We’ve loved going down to the village and the beach or walking the dog across the golf course,” they say, “but now it’s time for the next family to enjoy it.”
