Owners Justine and Mark had always admired 1 Milton Road, a classic character home in one of Northcote Point’s most sought-after locations.
Its elevated position takes full advantage of spectacular harbour views, and the couple knew that it would be a lovely place to enjoy with their daughters.
“When we heard through a friend that it was coming up for sale, in 2013, we were so excited and of course we bought it although we didn’t actually move in for a couple of years,” says Justine.
Once the time was right, she and Mark embarked on a complete revamp of the home’s interior, carefully and lovingly preserving heritage features like window seats, lead lights and timber floors, while using lots of white throughout to imbue a cool and contemporary Hamptons-style atmosphere and flavour.

“When I look back, we really have done a lot,” says Justine. “It was a big job!”
During the renovation they added the double garage and loggia as well as transforming one of the existing decks into a new lounge.
At the same time, they also created a completely self-contained studio with its own door for the girls. Needless to say, it quickly became a magnet to all their daughters’ friends.
Justine says that the house works very well in the sense that everybody can have their own space, and anyone working from home will appreciate the office.

Entertaining is easy with a very well-equipped kitchen and high-end appliances including a double oven and an induction hob. Thanks to a generous island, cooks can be part of the conversation while a handy scullery adds extra storage space.

There are three bedrooms upstairs, including the sophisticated master suite with its elegant ensuite and a period-style main bathroom. Justine and Mark have imaginatively blended old and new together in all of these spaces with perfect results.
Julie Shand, who is marketing this exceptional property, says she’s rarely seen a renovation this meticulous, and a new owner will be able to simply move in and never need to lift a finger.
“There are formal and informal spaces, and the tropical gardens are stunning, plus you’ve got the double lock-up garage.”

She says she also loves Justine and Mark’s use of shutters, allowing a cool breeze to float through the house in summer. As Justine and Mark prepare to downsize to a smaller section and no pool, they already feel a bit wistful about selling their happy family home.
“But we simply don’t need such a big property. We’ll miss the neighbourhood especially though, because everybody is so friendly and people always stop to chat,” she says.
She says that she and Mark are known for their famous New Year parties and will miss those as well. The property is close to award-winning restaurant The Engine Room, as well as to the Bridgeway Theatre and Le Roys Bush.
