The dream of buying a brand new home used to be out of reach for many Kiwis, but as developments like Hobsonville Point continue to grow, buying off the plans is becoming increasingly popular.
For some buyers, the prospect can be daunting; without seeing the finished house or apartment itself, how do you know what you’re getting?
Here's a handy guide to shopping for your new home off the plans when you visit Hobsonville Point:
Plan your visit
Start your property search
Hobsonville Point is such a big neighbourhood now that it is easy to miss the highlights when you’re new to the area. Whether you’re ready to start buying your new home or you just want to get a feel for the area, the best place to start is the Information Centre.
The centre, which is located just behind Catalina Café on the corner of Buckley Avenue
and Hastings Crescent, is open every day between 10am and 4pm and there’s always someone there to answer your questions. You can see a model of the township, pick up a map, brochures and an up-to-date price list for the homes for sale. If you’re interested in seeing the show homes, the info centre staff can give you addresses and opening hours and point you in the right direction.

Who doesn’t enjoy a snoop around a show home or display suite? They’re a great way to see the latest building and design trends, gather ideas and spark that debate about whether you would use a steam oven more than a garden shed. Hobsonville Point has 11 show homes and display suites open currently, and more coming.
Ask the right questions
If you’re in the market for a new home, here are a few key questions to put to the building companies when you visit their show home.
For all homes:
• What exactly is included in the quoted price?
• When can I move in?
• Would I have flexibility to change the interior?
• How much is the deposit?
• What is the payment schedule?
• Could I ‘up-spec’ the home?
• What warranties come with the home?
• What energy and water efficiency features does this home have?
For apartments
• What are the annual body corporate fees?
• What term are they fixed for?
• What percentage can they be raised by?
Good to know
All homeowners at Hobsonville Point pay an annual Residents’ Society fee ($150) and a one-off joining fee ($300). Some homes also attract a Laneway Society fee. Ask your builder if this is the case for the home you’re interested in.
