Given the strong heritage bungalow ambience visitors experience approaching the front door of this spacious home on a no-exit street accessing Cornwall Park, entry doesn’t necessarily reveal what they’re expecting.
The double grammar-zoned home oozes circa-1920s charm as you open a heritage-style pedestrian gate within its front rock wall and step on to its traditional covered front porch adorned with wooden shingles above.
One of the owners Nicola Hunt says: “Some people envisage a very traditional interior, until they see our open-plan area has five set of doors opening it right up to outside.
“We’ve been here for 15 years and it’s been a fantastic home for my husband Hils and I to raise our three now-adult children in. It’s a home to make memories in – the kids were aged from nine to 13 when we bought and they think of this as the home they grew up in.

“It’s a house that sort of wraps itself around you. It’s been like a sanctuary for our family and I felt very safe here when Hils travelled frequently for work.”
The family previously lived just three streets south in Gladwin Road but they wanted a nicer home and knew Golf Road offered the double grammar zoning that Gladwin fell outside of.
Nicola says: “One of the first things I noticed about this property was how wonderfully private it is. The previous owner had done a complete renovation in 2008, which was great because our children were approaching those busy teen years and Hils and I were both working hard.”
The layout’s front lounge and wide-opening living-dining-kitchen allowed them to easily watch the children in the alkaline swimming pool they added, on the home’s western side. They installed an adjustable Louvretec roof above part of the generous wrap-around decks, which are large enough for both parents and children to entertain.

“I’ve enjoyed the front lounge a lot, sometimes doing meditation there as it’s so serene and cosy.”
The newly renovated kitchen with scullery incorporates top-of-the-line Fisher & Paykel appliances and one of the skylights which ensures even the centre of this large layout enjoys the light.
Two of four good-sized bedrooms on this floor have ensuites which, like the family bathroom accompanying them, have been recently renovated. This level, which has vented temperature control, is completed by the carpeted internal-access double garage fronted by gated off-street parking.
Upstairs, a flexible room with tea-making facilities and sixth bedroom potential was the children’s media room-teen hangout until they grew up and it became Hil’s office.
Nicola says of the spacious upstairs master bedroom with walk-in wardrobe and dual shower ensuite: “It’s up and away from all other bedrooms so you feel like you can escape when you need to.”

“As the kids grew up they loved having a gate at the end of our road into Cornwall Park. Hils and I walk in the park every day, often with one of our neighbours.”
Their 754sqm property is two minutes’ walk from Greenwoods Corner’s shops and eateries and conveniently located for the CBD, Newmarket, motorway links and the airport. With children now living in London, Sydney and Melbourne, the couple are ready for their next chapter which will include visiting them overseas.
Agent Wei Wei Elder says: “It’s a privilege to present 2 Golf Road – a rare family sanctuary where 1920s character and contemporary luxury unite in a proud, privileged setting of timeless elegance and modern ease.”
2 Golf Road in Epsom, Auckland, is for sale by auction on November 12.
