Construction of this handsome home in Bell Road took over two years, but the wait was definitely worth it for the owners, Paula and Jim, who finally moved into the double award-winning, 262sqm dwelling, set on 621sqm, in 2017.
Their brief to Frans Kamerman, of Kamermans Architects – who they say was amazing, included a requirement to maximise the home’s sweeping, leafy views across the valley and bring light in through large windows, wherever possible.
Building a new home in a neighbourhood of classic villas and bungalows always requires special consideration, and the subtle, street-facing single-level front of the exterior, with its weatherboards with slot windows at the top for privacy, fits in perfectly.
It’s only once you’re beyond the front door that the size and magnitude of the property reveals itself, unfolding down the sloping site.

Paula says that her husband simply loves timber, and a great deal of it was incorporated into the design and build, both inside and out.
Although it wasn’t specifically something the couple asked for, the interior has a mid-century vibe that’s very comfortable and pleasing. On the first floor there are two double bedrooms, plus the main bedroom which has an ensuite, walk-in closet and a luxuriously large storage room adjacent.
The main bathroom is also here along with the media room, which is currently also the library, but Paula says it could easily be used as a fourth bedroom, depending on the purchaser’s requirements.
The enormous open-plan kitchen, dining and living space is on the second level along with a home office and over-sized double garage. Outside, extensive decking provides a number of spots for catching the sun and enjoying the view.

“I love to watch the day start and end. It’s easy to lose yourself for ages,” says Paula. Lush green easy-care landscaping complete the scene.
The home’s location is one of the most sought-after in Remuera, in a row where properties are tightly held. “As neighbours we’re not in each other’s pockets, but people always smile and wave and the atmosphere is very friendly.”
Paula’s able to walk to work, which has been a big bonus, and the train station is a short distance away.
“Jim has retired now, so we’re off to try a different style of living.”
She says that although her family is grown up, happy experiences with visiting grandchildren over the past nine years have proved that this is an ideal family home, especially as it’s zoned for top public schools and close to popular private ones.

Remuera village is nearby and Newmarket is just a short journey away.
Steve Koerber knows Bell Road well and has sold properties both in and around it.
“This home is so absolutely classic, I can’t imagine it ever really dating,” he says.
“It was designed 10 years ago yet is still right on trend. I think the owners were daring with the soft duck-egg blue kitchen and ensuite, and they both look fantastic.”
