An Auckland couple ditched plans to build their own dream beach home in Pauanui after a spur-of-the-moment decision to attend an open home for a bach designed by legendary architect Ron Sang.

The pair had long admired the beach home overlooking the estuary at the end of Golden Hills Drive and finally decided to have a nosey during the Easter holidays.
Harcourts listing agent Alyce Rowe told OneRoof that the Aucklanders loved what they saw so much, they made an offer after the first viewing.
The one snag was they owned a blank section further down the road and had spent the best part of a year working with an architect to design a statement home.

But now they own an 80s Sang original, they have put their section at 5 Golden Hills Drive on the market for sale.
Rowe said the Sang bach was a standout property – its floor-to-ceiling reflective glass windows and high-sloping roof are unlike anything else in the town – but it took a year to find new owners.
While the exact sale price cannot be revealed until after settlement, the property had an asking price of $2.395 million.

Rowe said the vendors, the Tracey family, were pleased with the result and could now move on. Son Steve Tracey told OneRoof last year that three generations of the family had enjoyed holidays there.
The new owners have tasked Harcourts with reselling their now-surplus 618sqm section.
Rowe said there were no covenants on the property so buyers had lots of options. “You can put a utility and caravans or camp on it or put on a second-hand dwelling. You can do whatever you like.”

There is also the option to use the couple’s plans for a modern wood-and-stone home.
Rowe is also selling another waterfront property at 17 Golden Hills Drive, which she said would be perfect for those either looking for a high-end holiday home or a permanent residence. The four-bedroom, three-bathroom home has an RV of $3.6m and is for sale by negotiation.
Rowe said the estuary location was popular with people who wanted spectacular views of Tairua’s night lights, as well as amazing sunsets over the Coromandel Ranges and The Pinnacles.
“Honestly, they are so spectacular. Whereas when you are on the beachfront you get amazing sunrises obviously, but you don’t get those same sunsets or the night lights.”
