A luxury apartment development to be built in the alpine village of Castle Hill in Canterbury with the ambience of a European ski resort is now on sale, with apartments selling from $399,000.

Bayleys agent Matthew Heazlewood, who is marketing the development with Emma King and Jo McIntosh, says 10 out of 35 apartments at Castle Hill Apartments in 16-25 Luge Loop, Selwyn have already sold.

The boutique development with one- and two-bedroom apartments looks over the Waimakariri Basin nestled between the Torlese and Craigieburn ranges, and every apartment in the complex has a mountain view.

“You’re getting a Queenstown alpine high-spec village feel – the ultimate Canterbury getaway,” Heazlewood says.

“Once those facilities are fully established, I imagine the prices will go up quite significantly.”

Castle Hill Apartments developer David Jesseps says he was aiming to create a new-age, high-country village similar to a European ski resort.

“It’s going to become a very popular location over time and we’re not going to rush it either. We will do something we’re proud of for generations to come,” he says.

Jesseps says the properties will initially appeal to buyers looking for a weekend getaway or a holiday home, but once the infrastructure grows and commercial facilities are developed, he expects the area to attract a wider range of buyers.

The one-bedroom apartments are on the market from $399,000 and the two-bedroom options from $649,000.

Construction is scheduled to begin early next year, with Heazlewood noticing a huge uptake in enquiries as summer approaches.

Each apartment comes with storage units for those adventure toys like skis and mountain bikes. For the interior design and fit-out, buyers have three options to choose from – light, dark or high-spec luxury.

Each architecturally-designed apartment will beautifully match the alpine surroundings with the two-bedroom apartments featuring natural wood, stone, designer appliances, air conditioning and a hot-tub upgrade at an extra cost.

The typical properties in Castle Hill include holiday homes and cabins, with this being the first apartment complex in the area, making it a unique development.

Rachel Dovey, of Bayleys, says the development, which will be perfect for those leisurely getaways, has been getting interest from buyers who want that lifestyle.

“We see a lot of alpine work near ski resorts but not in that location. Nothing compares to it,” she adds.

Just 90 minutes by car from Christchurch, Castle Hill has an abundance of outdoor activities such as mountain biking, tramping and rock climbing, as well as snowboarding and skiing at nearby Broken River and Cheeseman ski fields.
