OneRoof’s Ask the Expert series is aimed at helping consumers cut through the noise when buying goods and products for their home. It’s hard to make a decision when there’s so much out there, so who better to trust than the people who have the expertise and use these items for a living?
Robot vacuum cleaners have quietly shifted from a luxury gadget to an essential, particularly in busy households juggling kids, pets, work and constant foot traffic.
To find out which models deliver, OneRoof looked at feedback from hundreds of members of the Mum’s Collective Meta community and online reviews.
The verdict? A good robot vacuum doesn’t replace vacuuming entirely, but it can dramatically reduce the daily workload.

The performers homeowners are raving about
Dreame emerged as the clear favourite, with multiple homeowners describing their machines as “life-changing”, with some even joking that the robot cleaner was their “favourite child”.
Models such as the entry-level L30, the slightly more powerful L40 and the deluxe X50 Ultra earned praise for strong suction, reliable mapping and combined vacuum-and-mop performance. Users particularly liked the extendable mop pads that clean right to the edges, a big advantage on timber, laminate and tiled floors.
Pet owners also loved Dreame cleaners, with one golden retriever owner saying the robot handled shedding “brilliantly”. While they may be at a higher price point, the consistent message from users was simple: buy once and buy well.

Roborock was another favourite. Owners highlighted accurate mapping, powerful cleaning and dependable daily performance. Models like the Qrevo Edge were frequently mentioned as excellent for maintaining cleanliness between deeper cleans, especially in busy family homes.
Mid-range options are gaining support
For households wanting strong performance without top-tier pricing, users recommended Eufy.
Families praised app controls that allow room-by-room cleaning and boundary setting — particularly useful in homes with toys, pets or unpredictable clutter. One lifestyle-block parent with four children and two dogs said their robot runs every morning and “keeps me sane”.

Ecovacs models also attracted attention for their technology features. Some higher-end units include onboard cameras that allow owners to check in remotely (handy for monitoring pets or teenagers at home). Feedback suggests strong cleaning performance, although a few users noted mapping can occasionally become confused on entry-level models.
Budget buys that still get the job done
Not every household wants to or can spend more than $1000, and encouragingly, many lower-cost options still earned strong reviews.
Xiaomi robot vacuums were repeatedly praised for reliability and value, with some owners reporting daily use for up to four years without issues.

Meanwhile, Briscoes’ MyGenie models, including the Intelligent AI IQ600, proved popular sale-season purchases. Owners described them as “life savers” for everyday dust control, particularly in rural homes managing mud, pets and seasonal mess.
The features that matter most
Across brands, several must-have features stood out for users:
- Smart mapping: Older random-navigation models tend to get stuck or miss areas.
- Vacuum-and-mop combos: Highly valued in homes with hard flooring.
- App controls: The ability to set zones or clean individual rooms makes robots far more useful.
- Self-emptying docks: Reduces maintenance and keeps daily cleaning simple.
The verdict
Robot vacuums excel at maintenance cleaning, but are not a full replacement. They dramatically reduce visible dust, crumbs and everyday mess, but dried spills, corners and heavy shedding still need a hands-on approach from homeowners.
As one reviewer pointed out: “It doesn’t replace cleaning. It just means the house never gets properly dirty.”
A good robot vacuum won’t eliminate housework, but it might just give you back some of your weekend.
