Family members who pooled their money and bought almost 90 acres at 90 Mile Beach 20 years ago are selling up after abandoning their plans to create a retreat at the iconic Far North beauty spot.

The owners, who are split between Wellington and Australia, picked up the huge plot of land in 2006 for $1 million.
Ray White listing agent Alex Smits said one of the owners was from Kaitaia and convinced the other parties to create a family compound by the beach.
But their plans never got off the ground. One of the owners recently died, and several others wanted to cash in, so the group decided to sell.

They had only visited the Hukatere Road property a handful of times during their ownership, but it was exactly how it was when they bought it, Smits told OneRoof.
“They’ve done nothing [to it] – just paid rates on it every year.”
The property can only be accessed by the beach, but has lots of potential, Smits said. “You are buying a really cool piece of coastal frontage.”

The vacant plot includes 680m of beach frontage and is home to around 50 wild horses.
Smits said the property would appeal to a wide range of buyers, and highlighted its potential as an eco-preserve, a beachside resort for the half a million tourists who visited Cape Rēinga each year, or as a legacy estate with a Grand Designs-style bach.
“You’ve got surf there, you’ve got surfcasting off the beach – you’ve got the ability that it’s a road so you can drive your 4WD vehicle up and down the beach or your motorbike… There’s lots of entertainment to be had on the west coast.”

The property comprises three titles but is being sold as a single parcel of land. Smits said someone could resell the titles individually with the view of trying to turn a profit.
He said it was difficult to give a price indication for such a large piece of beachfront land, adding that it could be worth anywhere between what the owners paid for it ($1m) and the RV ($1.975m).
“They [the vendors] are prepared to meet the market. They just want to liquidate,” he said. “Buyers may be surprised about the value because the vendors have told me to sell it. Present all offers."
