Speaking from bleak mid-winter in the United Kingdom, where they live now, Steve and Hannah, the owners of this well-built 1960s home on a 1112sqm landscaped section in a popular Remuera neighbourhood, often find themselves thinking wistfully of the all-day sunshine they enjoyed during their years there.

“We started off renting it in 2019 and liked it so much we arranged to buy it,” says Steve.

He explains that the previous owners had worked in the property business, and they did a very extensive renovation on the 330sqm dwelling, based on their own experiences.

The result of that makeover was a completely transformed home, with an emphasis on large windows – to enhance natural light, and carefully chosen, restful colour schemes in the neutral tones of nature.

Steve says that the layout throughout works very well.

“You’ve got the master bedroom upstairs with an ensuite and walk-in wardrobe. It’s kind of set on the hillside so it’s very quiet and private – even if the neighbours have a party, you don’t hear anything at all.”

Also upstairs is the cool and contemporary family bathroom, a second bedroom and a generous study for working from home.

The living areas are big and bright, with gas fires in both lounges and the ultra-modern kitchen enjoys a walk-in pantry and plenty of storage space.

Access to the pool and spa area on this level is easy and free-flowing for fun in the sun and outdoor entertaining. Downstairs lies a two-car garage, laundry and wine cellar, along with two further bedrooms, a bathroom and a rumpus.

Steve and Hannah’s children are still small, but looking ahead the couple had thought that this level was potentially very suitable for teenagers, with good separation between the generations.

Remuera specialist Steve Koerber, who is marketing Steve and Hannah’s property, says that Meadowbank Primary is now one of Auckland’s most popular schools and young families are always keen to move into the area.

“56 Ngapuhi really presents as a practically new house. And it’s very suitable for a family at any age or stage,” he says.

“The neighbourhood has always had a very pleasant community feel – partly because it’s a no-exit street.”

Having relocated across the world, owner Steve says that he and Hannah and their children will remember this special home with great fondness.

“We made lots of friends and at my work there was a running joke that if anything needed doing, I’d always have the perfect neighbour for the job. Everybody was just so nice and welcoming, and we just loved Meadowbank school.”
