This 1095sqm legacy property has been cherished in the same family for the past 76 years and is one of the last remaining original waterfront homes in Takapuna.

It savours a very special, unique position tucked at the very end of Earnoch Avenue, embracing a serene seaside cove. The freehold estate is surrounded by some of the country’s most prized real estate and is now ready to enter its next chapter.

As their parents have now passed away, it’s being sold by the original owners’ children, who grew up in paradise with the beach as their backyard.

“The story goes that the agent rang my father one day to tell him about the property,” one of the siblings shares.

“He went down for a look late after work and saw the full moon rising over the water and said to himself, ‘I have to put a deposit on this house now or else we will miss out’. And here we are, 76 years later.”

When the couple purchased the property in 1950 it was a little two-bedroom bungalow that was expanded as the children came along. “They added on two bedrooms in 1952 then in 1960 they added another two storeys in front on the seaward side.”

The solid masonry, brick and weatherboard home is a perfectly preserved snapshot of the era and has been much loved and beautifully maintained over the decades. It incorporates four bedrooms (easily restored back to five bedrooms), three living areas, a study, separate laundry and double garage.

Classic interior highlights include the feature fireplace made from South Island river stones, touches of retro wallpaper and timber panelling, all topped with spectacular, intimate sea and Rangitoto views.

“The view is still beautiful to me after all these years. The moonrises in particular are incredible, especially when they come up above the centre of Rangitoto.”

The lawns and gardens extend down to the stone wall and water’s edge and she says this was a truly special place to grow up.

“We couldn’t have asked for anything better – the beach was our playground. For our parents it was a safe place for us to be as we were all good swimmers and they could check on us by looking out the window – by the end of summer I was permanently wrinkled from being in the water so much!

“My father taught us how to sail and water ski, then we got into windsurfing and my brothers were surfers.”

Their home was also a place for family, friends and neighbours to gather.

“We loved to share it with people. On Guy Fawkes we would open the house up and we’d have everyone round, we’d make a Guy and build a bonfire on the beach.

“America’s Cup Events were always exciting! We’d have family and friends from up and down the country staying, with extra beds in the caravan in the back garden. My parents loved having people round and my mother loved catering for everyone.”

Earnoch Ave is perfectly placed to enjoy everything Takapuna has to offer, which is all just footsteps away.

“It’s so quiet here and then you go up to Hurstmere Road and people are spilling out of the cafes. That’s the real beauty of it, you’re here in such a peaceful place and there’s so much to do, so you can pick and choose when you do it.”

Lewis Guy and Chelsea Docking, from Harcourts, are selling the property and said it’s captured plenty of interest already.

“We’ve had people from around the community come to us and say, with no vested interest, that’s the finest site in Takapuna – it’s very special,” says Lewis. “It’s also a genuine sale as it’s a deceased estate, so it very much just comes down to the market.”

They say the potential here is significant and absolutely undeniable.

“With the sheer volume of the land and the opportunity surrounding it, somebody will be able to create something exceptional. It could become one of the finest properties around the coast.”

Chelsea concurs this is an extremely rare offering and opportunity. “This is one of the last ones standing of the original homes, you really can’t get a site of this calibre in Takapuna anymore.”

20 Earnoch Avenue in Takapuna, North Shore, Auckland, is for sale, deadline closing April 16.
