The couple had flown in from Sydney to buy the five-bedroom waterfront spread in June 2024, after it was listed for sale by the outgoing CEO of Chorus.

They told OneRoof they were selling 36 Queen Street, Northcote Point, to move closer to family. They have bought two homes nearby and plan to create a multi-generational compound.

Danya said that Ken was appointed chairman of the Warriors while they were living in Sydney. The decision to return to New Zealand was sealed by the arrival of the first grandchild.

“Ken’s daughter, my stepdaughter, Sacha, had her first child, and it just felt like Sydney was too far away,” Danya told OneRoof. “So we made the decision to move back.”

The couple had previously lived in Ponsonby and Herne Bay while in New Zealand, but Sacha was living in Birkenhead and wanted them close. “We were able to find this absolute hidden gem at 36 Queen Street, and we’ve absolutely loved it here. We anticipated that this would be the home where we raised our grandchildren and made beautiful memories.”

However, the real estate market had different ideas, and when two neighbouring homes came up for sale, the couple pounced. “We had a unique opportunity to secure [the two homes]. We have always talked as a family about wanting to have a family compound, and this has just made it a reality,” Danya said. “The plan is that the family will live in one, and Ken and I will renovate and live in the other.”

Danya told OneRoof that both she and Ken loved Northcote Point. “Everything. It’s so quiet – and I mean that in a good way.

“We’ve got the ferry at the end of the street, and there just seems to be this upswelling of new life coming into the [neighbourhood]. It’s attracting a lot of younger families, and it’s bringing a lot more energy.

“You’ve got that Ponsonby feel in this little enclave. And everything’s so close to the water. We just love it.”

Danya said it takes the couple just seven minutes to get to the city. She works from home four days a week, and Ken tends to travel to the Warriors’ office at Mt Smart Stadium on his Triumph Bonneville motorcycle.

“We’re both keen motorcyclists, so if you’ve got a motorbike, it’s not an issue. He’s out there multiple times in a week,” she said.

The couple are, of course, Warriors fans and watch all the games. “Win or lose, it’s always going to be an exciting game, watching the Wahs. I’m very excited for this season.”

36 Queen Street has an RV of $3.625m and is for sale with Bayleys agents Nic, Anna and Sue Mayhew. Their listing on OneRoof said the circa-1910 character home is rich in history and “delivers a rare combination of timeless elegance, modern comfort, and absolute waterfront living”.

“Elevated above the inner harbour and west-facing, the home enjoys uninterrupted water views and breath-taking sunsets. Direct garden access to the harbour invites kayaking, paddleboarding, or refreshing swims, while cyclone-resistant soil anchors installed in 2022 provide confidence and peace of mind.

“Inside, original character features have been thoughtfully preserved and enhanced by contemporary design. Polished timber floors, soft neutral tones, skylights, and expansive glazing bathe the home in natural light and frame the ever-changing harbour outlook.”

Nic Mayhew told OneRoof that there was a limited supply of large character family homes in Northcote Point. “They are still more affordable than nearby Herne Bay and Westmere. We are finding that a lot of our buyers are coming over the bridge as they see better value on the Point.

“People love the community feel, easy access to the CBD and motorways heading north and south. It’s an amazing lifestyle.”
