The three-bedroom river cottage on Hall Place, in Foxton Beach, is Rosie Rochester’s love letter to her grandmother, and so selling was one of the hardest decisions she’s had to make.

She had bought the holiday home in 2018 for $280,000 after receiving a small inheritance from her 103-year-old grandmother, Jessie Ridd.

The 1950s-era property was a blank canvas when she picked it up, but she soon made it her own. She filled the house with many of her grandmother’s treasures and additional curiosities picked up from her frequent trips to op shops.

Its new owner, Wellingtonian dad Jay Goldsack, told OneRoof he was looking for an investment property when he stumbled on the listing for Rosie’s River Cottage.

He said he jumped in the car and drove to Foxton Beach to view the property in person, after which he knew he had to make an offer.

Goldsack, who admits to “dabbling” in poker in his spare time, said: “I’ve been looking for investment properties over the last six months; anywhere from Wellington up to Levin, but that one just stood out.

“I like taking risks, and I guess this one’s a little bit of a risk. We thought we’d put in an offer [of $464,000] and see what happens.”

He was thrilled Rochester accepted his offer. He told OneRoof that the bach would give him somewhere to take his two children during the weekends. “I love fishing, and anything to do really with the ocean.”

He added: “We thought we could add a few little bits and pieces to it as well. We’ve got a really cool retro caravan that I’m going to put in there, and we’ll do like a nice hot tub outside.”

Goldsack, who plans to rent the bach out on Airbnb when he’s not using it to bring in extra income, said he would retain the property’s name, Rosie’s River Cottage. “My grandmother’s name was Rosie, and she played a big part in our lives growing up with children, so we thought that was kind of nice.”

Harcourts agent Tim Cook was delighted to see the bach sold to Goldsack, who will become his next-door neighbour at the beach.

Rochester, who is moving to Rotorua, told OneRoof last month that listing the property for sale had been difficult, but she knew it was time for a new family to enjoy it.
