Home buyers will soon have their first opportunity to secure one of 51 homes in Te Punga, the first stage of a landmark Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Properties development on hapū land formerly occupied by Unitec.

Bordering Mount Albert and Point Chevalier, Te Punga forms part of Te Kūkūnga Waka, a master-planned community spanning almost 40ha. Over the next decade, the wider development is expected to create one of Auckland’s most significant urban regeneration projects.

Meaning “the anchor”, Te Punga reflects its role as a cornerstone of the emerging neighbourhood. As the southern gateway to the precinct, it has been carefully planned to complement the established suburban streets that surround it.

Currently under construction and scheduled for completion in quarter one of 2027, the homes have been designed by Cottee Parker and are being built by G.J. Gardner Homes, with community, sustainability and connection at the heart of the vision.

Neil Donnelly, general manager property at Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, says while young families are expected to form a key part of the buyer pool, Te Punga is expected to appeal to a broad range of residents.

“We expect strong interest from first and second-home buyers, as well as downsizers with long-standing ties to the area who are looking for the comfort and convenience of a high-quality new home in a central suburb.

“Purchasers are also likely to recognise the value of securing a home in a new neighbourhood that will benefit from significant infrastructure and recreational investment over the coming years,” he says.

The current stage offers a selection of two, three and four-bedroom homes with generous floor areas and a variety of layouts.

Entry-level homes start at over 100sqm and include two bedrooms and one large bathroom, while the largest residences provide 199sqm of internal living space featuring four bedrooms, two full bathrooms and a downstairs WC, a media room, and expansive open-plan kitchen, living and dining areas.

Throughout the development, thoughtful architecture combines timeless brick facades with distinctive curved design elements.

Fully ducted heating and cooling systems provide year-round comfort, while contemporary interiors draw inspiration from natural colours and textures, creating warm and sophisticated living environments.

Kitchens and bathrooms are finished to a high standard with quality cabinetry and Fisher & Paykel appliances, while outdoor living areas have been designed to maximise privacy, sunshine and shelter.

With ample parking provided for every home, residents will enjoy a range of transport options, including excellent motorway access, proximity to Mount Albert Train Station and future CRL services, as well as extensive walking and cycling connections.

Thomas McAlister, national director – residential projects at Colliers, which is marketing the homes, says Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Properties’ commitment to quality is evident throughout the development.

“Master-planned communities such as Stonefields and Hobsonville have shown how large-scale urban regeneration can transform an area into a vibrant, highly sought-after place to live,” he says.

“We expect to see a similar evolution here, offering early residents the opportunity to become part of a neighbourhood that will grow and thrive for generations.”

By the time residents move in, Te Punga’s landscaped streets and signature pocket park will be well established, creating an attractive neighbourhood from day one. Residents will enjoy easy access to the Waterview Path, bush walks around Oakley Creek and the precinct’s new destination playground.

Anchored between the summit of Mount Albert and the beaches of Point Chevalier, Te Punga balances natural amenity with urban convenience, placing the cafes, bars, supermarkets and village amenities of both neighbourhoods just moments away.

Te Punga will be launched on August 1 at the on-site display suite, located at the end of Laurel Street, Mount Albert. Units are priced from $895,000. For more information, visit tepunga.co.nz.
