While many New Zealanders like beach houses that are large and aspirational designer masterpieces – with all mod-cons, others search for authentic, laid-back kiwi-style simplicity.

In 2021, at 6 Pohutukawa Avenue in Waiheke Island’s Omiha, the current owners found their own ideal holiday hideaway, a classic two-bedroom 1980s bach perched on an elevated ridge with sweeping views across both Rocky Bay and Kauakarau Bay, to the west.

They say it’s exactly what they wanted: “A cosy, comfortable place where we can really relax,” adding that they enjoy being able to see the twinkling lights of Auckland’s CBD over the Hauraki Gulf at night, while keeping an eye on the picturesque Rocky Bay Memorial Cruising Club marina from their wrap-around deck during the day.

“We didn’t actually realise that while Rocky Bay faces south, this place is north-facing, so even in winter it’s a real suntrap.”

The property comes with mooring at the club – a definite attraction for these water-lovers who appreciate the fact that they can be on to their boat and out to sea within minutes.

After some initial refurbishment, repainting the interiors in cool, crisp white, replacing curtains and freshening up the bathroom, vacation vibes kicked in and the couple found themselves warmly welcomed by the close-knit community surrounding them.

“We all have drinks at the local hall on the first Friday of the month – BYO bottle and a plate – plus a New Year’s Eve party that’s always lots of fun.”

If they’re not socialising with their neighbours, or out fishing, the owners like to sit quietly or walk in the bush, enjoying a soundtrack of birdsong. Kaka and kereru are a constant presence and kaka are also nesting on Waiheke these days.

“When we look out of our kitchen window, we often see a heron sitting on a branch of the pohutukawa tree.”

While it feels a million miles from Auckland, postcard-perfect Waiheke Island is very easily accessed by ferry. “You can either use your car or catch a bus up from the Maitiatia terminal,” the owners say.

They’ve tidied up the native tree-lined driveway and added new plantings to enhance the existing flora. An electric wheelbarrow has proved handy for transporting groceries.

There’s potential for excavating under the existing house perhaps to move the laundry – but the owners haven’t explored that in great detail.

Despite their affection for Omiha and the memory of four very happy years visiting regularly, they’ve found another spot further north of Auckland that suits their current needs a little better.

“But we’re leaving here very reluctantly – in fact, the locals are begging us to stay as we’ve fitted in so well!”

Kristina Clarke is marketing this special property and says that Pohutukawa Avenue is just a handy few minutes’ drive from shops and from the wineries that have brought the island international fame.

“This truly one-of-a-kind, affordable family bach offers some great chattels – and the sale includes most furniture,” she adds.

“You can literally just move in!”
