The 1400sqm property has an RV of over $11 million and features a state-of-the-art cinema, a rooftop pool, a music room, six bedrooms, six bathrooms and four kitchens.

It’s listed with New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty agent Aaron Reid, and is one of Auckland’s most expensive properties for sale right now.

Records show Adamson bought the warehouse in 2017 for just under $5m, and carried out significant improvements.

OneRoof reached out to Reid for comment, but had not heard back at the time of writing.

Reid’s listing highlights just how lavish Adamson’s slice of “Manhattan” is.

“Every so often we are privileged to market a home so special and exceptionally unique that it is safe to say there is nothing like it in all of New Zealand,” Reid wrote.

He describes the property as the “pinnacle of urban living” and an “exceptional” warehouse conversion influenced by the iconic lofts of New York City.

“Completed in 2020, this opulent residence embodies modern luxury, fusing style, comfort, and sophistication within walking distance of the city’s finest cafes, boutiques, and eateries.

“Admire the breathtaking visual oasis created by soaring ceilings, exposed brick walls, and a stunning panorama of steel-framed doors in this spacious, light-infused home.

“Bask in magnificent sunsets over the renowned Waitakere mountains from your private deck or infinity pool, savoring a glass of wine from your personal cellar.”

The residence is spread across three distinct living areas and has Hollywood written all over it.

Adamson and his third wife Michelle Jonas have kitted it out with a TV room, games room, bar, gym, artist studio, workshop, six-car garage, wine cellar, and a state-of-the-art 12-seat cinema – “arguably one of the country’s finest”, Reid wrote.

The main living area has a gourmet kitchen and spacious scullery, and a plant-filled atrium which opens to a heated swimming pool, hot tub, open fireplace and barbecue area.

The music room is “designed for musicians and audiophiles” while the cinema room delivers cutting-edge technology and plush seating, said the listing.

Adamson was one of the hottest directors in Hollywood in the early 2000s. He made his name directing the first two Shrek films – the first won an Academy Award for best animated feature, and the second shattered box office records.

He has also directed and co-wrote the first two Narnia films, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and Prince Caspian. His last feature was the 2012 film Mister Pip, an adaptation of the novel by New Zealand author Lloyd Jones starring Hugh Laurie.

A New Zealand Herald article told of how Adamson had a personal connection to the Mister Pip setting, in Bougainville, as he grew up in Papua New Guinea.

“He lived there from the age of 11 to 18 with his missionary parents, and only got into film-making after a car accident on the island left him with a broken leg, causing him to miss his university enrolment for architecture school,” said the article.

Adamson moved to San Francisco aged 24 but later returned to Auckland with his children. He sold his waterfront home in Auckland’s Westmere to former All Black Ali Williams and billionaire Zuru Toys sibling Anna Mowbray for $24m in 2020.

The couple demolished the home and has been embroiled in disputes with neighbours over whether they can land private helicopters there.
