Freshly renovated throughout by the current owner, Lynne, using a cool, contemporary palette based on the colours and textures of nature, it’s hard to believe that this comfortable, modern home stands on a 2039sqm piece of land that was formerly the site of not only one, but three historic mills.

Its life as a timber mill began in 1844, then in 1855 it became a flour mill, but only for a relatively short time. After that, the site was occupied by Riverhead’s paper mill until 1923.

“We still have an original stone retaining wall and the remains of a old chimney on the property,” says Lynne.

Situated safely behind remote-controlled gates and surrounded by well-established trees and other plantings, the house is set across one level and has a big kitchen diner and living room at its heart, offering easy access to the expansive, sun-kissed deck area.

Four smart and stylish bedrooms include the master suite, complete with its own bathroom and a generous walk-in wardrobe. The main bathroom is large and luxurious, and the spacious separate laundry is another standout feature.

Families will appreciate the spacious study – or media/family room – and the owner has paid careful attention to detail, maximising privacy and views.

“It’s hard to believe that this idyllic life is really possible – just 20 minutes or so from the Auckland CBD,” says Lynne.

“Having a river at the bottom of the garden means that the scenery is always changing. Dolphins regularly swim up to play, and the tradespeople I had working here were completely amazed that they could catch snapper and flounder, quite literally off the lawn, then I would throw it in a pan for them.”

A single garage and a car port keep vehicles out of the elements and in addition, there’s ample off-street parking.

Having completed the Elliot Street project, Lynne is ready for her next challenge and is preparing to move on to another property, closer to the city, in Herne Bay.

“I’ve absolutely loved living in Riverhead, it’s such a pleasant, peaceful spot,” she says. “I have two small dogs who quickly helped me make friends with my lovely neighbours and Riverhead Village has such a nice, welcoming atmosphere.”

Denise Glozier, from LJ Hooker Ponsonby, says that the owner has done an extraordinary job of updating what was previously a very tired Lockwood home.

“It’s completely unrecognisable now. Lynne sure knows how to make a property absolutely stunning and no two days here are ever the same. The surroundings look beautiful in every season – and especially so now, in autumn.”

Denise says that Riverhead’s excellent location, right on the doorstep of Coatesville, has seen it race ahead in recent years and local property is becoming increasingly desirable.

As an added bonus for buyers, plans to extend the house have been drawn up, and approved – offering significant potential for new owners to add further value, whilst enjoying an idyllic lifestyle that’s seldom found elsewhere.
