Owners Chris and Angela bought their 225sqm 1920s bungalow in Remuera in 2012 and swiftly proceeded to give it a comprehensive makeover.
“It was basically in good shape, but it definitely needed some care and attention. We started at the top with a new roof and worked our way down, painting, replacing the carpet and putting in a new bathroom,” says Chris.
He and Angela planned the project carefully, conscious of the need to preserve the dwelling’s original character features – including classic leadlight windows – wherever they could.
The result is a bright, airy, light-filled home with what Chris describes as a “great sense of space”.

Downstairs is the internal access double garage with large areas of storage adjacent, along with a big rumpus room and a bedroom.
On the main level an open-plan kitchen and living room is complemented by separate dining next door.
The kitchen is generous and well equipped, with quality appliances, plenty of benchtop food prep capacity and ample drawer and cupboard space. Standing at the sink is a pleasure with expansive views across the rooftops of the leafy suburb.
A foyer at the end of the living room leads to the covered patio outside.
Sitting on a compact section, the property offers plenty of space for outdoor living and entertaining with level, easy-care lawn at the front and rear, as well as established fruit trees.

Maungarei Road is very conveniently positioned, within walking distance of popular Meadowbank Primary School, and is also zoned for Remuera Intermediate and Selwyn College. A number of top private schools are very easily accessible and there are regular public transport services along Remuera Road.
Chris says that without a doubt, the biggest highlight of the family’s 13 years in residence has been getting to know the people next door.
“It’s like the TV show where neighbours become good friends, and we’ll certainly be keeping in touch with them because we really enjoy each other’s company.”
Now that their children are getting older, he and Angela are planning to move to a new style of property – probably something in the lock-up-and-leave category – and he says that they will both miss their patio, in particular.
“It’s been a great place to have people around and with its roof, it’s usable all year.”

Ben Ryken, from Ray White, says that the rumpus room downstairs is very versatile and lends itself to working from home, while the downstairs bedroom is great for guests.
He adds that the property is very well-located in one of Remuera’s best pockets just minutes from the Upland Road Village; the Lunn Ave shops, and Waiatarua Reserve, which is full of native trees and birdlife.
“It’s a perfect place for sports fans too with College Rifles Sports Club right nearby.”
This popular neighbourhood facility includes rugby, netball and athletics facilities, with a gym.
