A popular parcel of pristine freehold land on the Coromandel Peninsula has been purchased by the New Zealand Coastal Trust meaning locals and visitors will be able to continue to enjoy the world-famous beach.

The undulating, coastal land totalling some 30ha has magnificent views across the Pacific Ocean and is located at the northern end of Wainuiototo Bay on the Coromandel Peninsula. The area is commonly referred to as New Chums Beach.

Colliers brokers Tony Allsop and Roger Seavill brokered the $2.15 million sale, which took place via mortgagee tender and has received significant publicity this week.

“This was a highly complex transaction, and the property was subject to strong interest from a wide range of parties. Ultimately, it’s pleasing to see the consortium of local buyers come together to be able to retain this treasured spot,” Allsop says.

“New Chums Beach is a stunning piece of land and many New Zealanders and international visitors will be able to experience its unique surrounds for many years to come.

“The property has an approximate 1km-long eastern boundary adjoining the recreational reserve beside the foreshore.

“About 200m of this boundary offers frontage to the world-famous New Chums Beach.

"The land comprises a mixture of native bush and regenerating scrub with an easterly aspect overlooking the pristine sands and azure water.”

Linda Cholmondeley Smith, of Preserve New Chum for Everyone Inc, says it is heartening to see so many passionate groups involved with the sale, including partner organisations and the local community, while a wide range of donations were made to a Givealittle page they set up.

"This is a great day for all who love this wonderful, beautiful and iconic place," Cholmondeley Smith says.

"We cannot thank enough the many people across the country and overseas, who contributed.

“In the new year the groups involved with the successful bid will establish the governance and management structure of the headland.”
