When couple Nik and Jaya were looking to move from the Bays with their young daughter, the wish list which led them to this picture-perfect family villa at 14 Entrican Avenue contained many of the classic features sought in Remuera.
Jaya says: “We wanted a larger house we could spend quality family time in but not so large that we lost each other in it. We wanted to be closer to good private schools for our daughter and knew we wanted a weatherboard house with a pool in a quiet street.
“I wanted the kids’ bedrooms to be on the same level as ours. And we were after a home with a spacious open-plan kitchen and living area and seamless indoor outdoor flow, so we could easily host parties and get-togethers.”
The busy couple have ownership in and run a large-scale food business and wanted somewhere already completely renovated to a high standard.

In 2008 the previous owners had Greg Jones Architects completely modernise and renovate this home, while still maintaining the character of the original early-1900s heritage villa.
“The first time Nik and I walked into this house, within a few minutes, we looked at each other and we knew we found our perfect place. We haven’t had a single visitor who has walked in and not been completely in love with this house. ‘Stunning’ is probably the most frequent word we hear.”

Tree-lined Entrican Avenue is zoned for double grammar and Remuera Primary and Intermediate. It’s in the single house zone and is a historic heritage and a special character area with many stand-alone villas.
A white picket fence introduces the two-storey home, alongside a separate double garage. The contour of the 841sqm hedged property means entry is into the lower level with front porch, yet the first floor also enjoys seamless level indoor outdoor flow.
Children can play on a flat lawn both out the front and the rear. They’ve used the ensuited bedroom off the foyer as a guest suite but previous owners used it as a third living area.
On the main level, decks wrap around three sides of an open-plan kitchen-family room with neighbouring lounge, inviting easy entertaining.
The modernity of central heating/cooling and the sleek white marble kitchen co-exist with the character of high ceilings and timber floors.

Former food blogger Jaya says: “Being able to cook while watching my daughter and her friends play outside or in the pool, listening to their peals of laughter, is fantastic.”
The rear of the home faces north-west, bathing the living areas and heated salt-water swimming pool in sun.
Three bedrooms, including the ensuited master with walk-in wardrobe, a family bathroom, office and separate laundry complete the layout. A pull-down ladder from the office accesses the attic with strengthened floor, which they’d wondered about extending into in future.
“It’s so peaceful sitting on the upstairs veranda, listening to birds chirping in the street’s oak trees. Yet we can reach the motorway in five minutes.”
The couple are in the midst of planning an acquisition to further expand their business and are looking to move to Australia in the near future.
