Like all good pubs, there’s a story behind the slightly unusual name of The Phat Duck.
The Ashburton hostelry is independently owned and run by husband-and-wife team Skip and AJ, who met as flatmates almost 20 years ago. They have many years working in hospitality together and love what they do.
When they took over the pub on State Highway 1 in the bustling Canterbury town, centre of a region that's home to 35,000 residents, it was known as Robbie’s.
Four years ago Skip and AJ decided to renovate their establishment. They wanted a new name to reflect both the new vibe and the area, but they just couldn’t crack it.

One day Skip was looking out the window when he saw a rather overweight duck struggling to take off from the stream next to the restaurant. “That’s it,” thought Skip, “we’ll call it the Phat Duck.”
For the first time in 16 years, the business is now on the market through Sami Chesterton of Link Business Broking, who says the Phat Duck is modern, light, welcoming and works as a family restaurant and fun bar with entertainment.
It appeals to both the locals and offers a welcome break for travellers driving through the busy rural town.
The community loves their local for the combination of relaxed dining in the 50-seater family restaurant or a chat at the bar, which has TV screens for avid sports watchers, pokie and TAB machines.
Outside, landscaped seating areas are situated to capture the sun and for easy access to the bar area.
The modern interior fit-out is inviting and relaxed and has been well maintained to a high level. The kitchen and food preparation areas are generous with quality commercial equipment.
Chesterton says revenue has been consistent over the last four years averaging $1.7 million.
“Considering the challenges the industry has had, it is testament to the loyal local trade and bodes well for further growth as borders open and tourists travel this busy SH1 route.”
At the northern entrance to Ashburton, the total site covers 3550sq m, including generous carpark in the rear for over 50 cars, easy access on and off the highway, and a main building of 400sq m with two outside garden areas directly off the bar/restaurant.
Chesterton says the owners have made the difficult decision to sell, but “they are certain a new owner will reap the rewards of what is a favourite hospitality venue.”
Asking price for the Phat Duck Brew Bar & Kitchen, 360 Allen St (SH1), Allenton, Ashburton is $730,000 plus stock.
