“We had built before, but once our third son arrived, the home we were living in was too small,” says the owner of this stylish 394sqm five-bedroom masonry property on a prime site in Mission Bay.

“While we were looking, we found a place in Remuera that really appealed, but it didn’t have quite everything we needed, so we decided to build again, keeping what we liked about it in mind. The only problem was finding a suitable section.”

He says that this problem was luckily soon solved.

“My buddy, who was a real estate agent, knew what we wanted and told me about a section in Godden Crescent, where an old lady had lived for about 60 years.

“It had the size, dimensions, and elevation we were looking for, so we put in a pre-auction offer. We had the impression that there were other keen parties, but when the auction was brought forward, we were the only ones there, and of course we snapped it up!”

Despite the home’s generous proportions and the use of heavy-duty materials, construction took less than a year. “We went from breaking earth in February to moving in that November. The concrete contractors we used were really great and they did an amazing job.”

He says that although the property looks unprepossessing from the street, behind the secure gates a remarkable family compound swiftly unfolds.

“Once people are inside the front door, looking at the atrium opening up, they’re immediately impressed,” says the owner. With soaring ceiling, the expansive living, dining and kitchen area – complete with walk-in pantry is genuinely spectacular.

Four bedrooms are also ultra-spacious, and each enjoys its own classic, yet contemporary bathroom. A dedicated home office is ideal for today’s flexible working styles and separate, self-contained accommodation is a huge bonus. It includes a bedroom and bathroom with potential for a kitchenette, plus a separate living area and even a home gym.

The property is in zone for Kohimarama School and Selwyn College and is within easy walking distance of Eastridge Shopping Centre.

“Although it’s a big house, it’s a friendly house and the boys will have lots of nice memories of playing football and cricket outside with their friends, or splashing in the pool” says the owner.

“Now that they’re grown-up, we could stay here, but it’s really too large, and a smaller lock-up-and-leave place would be far more suitable.”

Bayleys agent Peter Cleave: “Overall this is a fantastic package.” Photo / Supplied

The Cleaves are marketing the property and Peter Cleave says that potential buyers have been in awe when they see what’s on offer.

He says the home is 15 years old, yet it looks and feels timeless and could have been built yesterday, thanks to the owners’ excellent taste, commitment to quality and attention to maintenance.

“You don’t see modern architecture like this very often in Mission Bay and because it was custom-built for the owner, they’ve really paid attention to detail. There’s off-street parking for more vehicles or a boat and the indoor-outdoor flow is exceptional.

“It’s also unusual but really great to have ensuites for all the bedrooms. Overall this is a fantastic package.”
