The prime location of Mangawhai Heads is what first drew financial advisor Adrian Padfield to 12 Holiday Crescent in 2007. Proximity to the water and ocean views were imperative for the avid boater and fisherman.

“It’s in easy walking distance to the beach, the water. It was important to me to that I be relatively close to the boat launching areas,” he says.

The 1980s Lockwood house features all-natural timber throughout, living spaces that open out onto north and west-facing decks which means that there is always sun and shade, and three bedrooms – two doubles and one single.

The kitchen has been updated and includes all of the trimmings with plenty of pantry space and a bach luxury: a dishwasher.

Boat storage is not lacking at the property either as several years ago Padfield had the garage excavated to create enough room to store his prized Rayglass 650 boat.

“I think it’s an important part of the property to be honest,” he says. “If you’re going to own a boat you don’t want to store it down the road.”

Padfield is especially proud of the landscaping which has evolved over the last 15 years, creating level lawns for children and grandchildren to play on and planting palm trees and a number of natives.

Numerous fruit trees can also be found in the garden with feijoas, lemons, limes amongst them, and a particularly bountiful avocado tree.

“We also have several frangipani so you get that beautiful scent in the evening in summertime,” he adds.

Taking advantage of the elevated views from the home, extensive decking has been installed creating multiple spaces for entertainment and plenty of room to host extended family for alfresco dinners and barbecues. Ranch sliders offer that ever important seamless indoor-outdoor flow.

“You get morning and midday sun on the front deck and afternoon sun on the rear deck,” Padfield says.

“When you come back from fishing, you can sit out there enjoying a beer and just relax. It’s really lovely.”

Of course, the beach, while close, is not the only thing in close walking distance in Mangawhai Heads.

Bayleys agent Dianne Christensen says that you can leave the car at home when you head to the beach or out for dinner and drinks. “It’s just such a neat location in terms of walking to everywhere,” she says. “The kids can even walk around to the shops to get an icecream or go to the playground without even crossing the road.”

Padfield, too, thinks that one of the benefits of the Mangawhai location versus other similar locales is the proximity of its great shops, cafes and food options – particular favourites are the nearby bakery and French restaurant Frog and Kiwi.

“You’ve got lovely dining restaurants, no question about that, and good takeaways.”

Not just limited to the kiwi classic fish and chips, everyone’s tastes are catered for with takeaway options like Chinese, Indian and sushi.

Online grocery shopping is also no problem as locals discovered over the last two years of lockdowns with the nearby Four Square and the farther afield Warkworth Countdown offering the service.

Padfield’s family has made many great memories at 12 Holiday Crescent. He sums up his time at the Heads as simply, “Mangawhai’s got everything.”

12 Holiday Crescent in Mangawhai Heads goes to auction on February 17. The property is being marketed by Christensen, Stephyn St James and Robbie Robertson, all of Bayleys.
