One could barely ask for more than a character home fewer than 500 metres from the beach, in one of Auckland’s loveliest suburbs.
Which is no doubt why Bill McDonald and his family were instantly sold on the property at 47 Kohimarama Road in Kohimarama some years ago.
“We saw the house and knew it was perfect for us,” he says.
“Being so close to the beach was a huge plus and we have utilised that extensively for morning swims and evening strolls.

“During the lockdown periods it absolutely came into its own.” A timely benefit indeed.
Removed from the street and with a commanding elevated presence, the 1920s bungalow isn’t short on appeal.
Fronted by a portico, rounded topiaries and a white picket fence, and wrapped by a vast deck, the north facing outdoor living is exceptional.
Polished rimu floors, panelled ceilings and bungalow details throughout have remained untouched.
“The house was built in the 1920s, it has great craftsmanship. We have ensured it has kept its original character,” McDonald says.
Four spacious bedrooms, three bathrooms and two living areas have served the McDonalds well.
He adds, “We loved its character and position, just slightly elevated, providing a little view of the water.”
Each room is generous and light-filled, certainly there is no shortage of space. The living and dining areas join the modern kitchen and open out onto the large back deck.
“I think the best part is the sun-filled kitchen and living area which is spacious but also allows family interaction no matter where you are,” McDonald says.
“Having two double garages is also a huge plus, so bikes and water sports can spill over while still retaining cover for cars and workshop area.”
Verdant and beautifully maintained, the home’s garden has been the beneficiary of the McDonalds’ combined resourcefulness, “creating a stone filled gabion wall, which we love, both from a practical sense and aesthetically.”
“We also installed raised bed vegetable gardens on the upper lawn which have been producing fantastically and fit in beautifully with the citrus grove behind,” McDonald says.
Lisa Stone, who is marketing the property to be sold at auction adds, “It’s such an attractive home from the outside, it has such lovely character.
“The layout works so well, there is a natural separation of the kitchen, dining and living area but they are still open and light, and they all open to sunny decks. Of course, the location is excellent.”
Detailing life in the beachside suburb, McDonald says, “Kohi is the best part of Auckland we have ever lived in. It just feels good.
“I’m not sure if it’s the aspect or proximity to the water or the fantastic neighbours, but it has been a great house and a great place for the family to live.
“We are going to miss it greatly.”
47 Kohimarama Road in Kohimarama will be sold at auction on September 15.
