Spookers is a New Zealand attraction like no other, with an impressively strong identity built up over the last 16 years — recognised as the premium nailbiting, adrenaline-pumping, scariest attraction in the country. It boasts four themed attractions — Haunted House, The Woods, Disturbia and The Fog.

In 2005 Spookers opened at 833 Kingseat Rd, South Auckland, with many of the special effects being created with assistance from Weta Workshops.

This is a well-established business with nearly half a million Facebook followers that also caters for work and private functions.

Spookers is a live entertainment experience in which the victims move through theatrically themed Haunted Houses and outdoor environments populated by sets, props and live scare actors.

As visitors walk through the experiences they encounter visual, tactile, and sound effects intended to scare the yell out of them.

Sets and rooms are constantly updated and refreshed as new ideas are integrated into the experience.

The business has enjoyed weekly average sales of some $25,000 over the past three years and has its own licensed restaurant, café and bar with a 100-seater banquet room making it ideal for Christmas corporate functions.

With a strong social media presence, Spookers now has nearly 500,000 followers on Facebook, some 800 Google reviews with an average 4.5-star rating and an email database of near 11,000 subscribers.

It even has its own documentary, made in 2016, which had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival and was shown at festivals and cinemas in over 20 countries.

The attraction’s accolades include being a finalist in the NZ Tourism Industry Awards.

It has featured on every free-to-air television channel more than once, including Breakfast, Jono & Ben, Seven Sharp, The Edge, Crowd Goes Wild, Amazing Race and Travel Getaway.

It has appeared in national and local magazines and newspapers including The Listener, North & South, Woman’s Weekly and Woman’s Day.

Even its brown motorway signs on SH1 each side of the Karaka and Papakura exits are seen by hundreds of thousands of people every day.

Music videos made at Spookers include The Datsuns’ So Long, Silence The City, Minuit, Ash vs Evil Dead, British artist Declan McKenna and The Adam & Eve Show.

With its own trademark in place, Spookers has no direct competition in New Zealand.

There is a huge opportunity to grow the business with costume and make-up hire, themed accommodation, make-up and acting workshops, corporate hosted events, murder mysteries, glamour photo shoots and private birthday video messages.

Having established the New Zealand business, the owners have built their operational and management team to the point where they are now able to detach themselves from the day-to-day running of the business.

The working owners are the two full-time staff and the part-time staff is made up of actors as well as the shop, catering and security teams.

The management has comprehensive operations manuals which are continually updated that will assist in a smooth handover to the new owner.

The current owners - Andy and Beth Watson, Julia and Jemall Tukiri - are sad to be selling but their family commitments beckon.

While some service industry skill would be of benefit, it is the ability to manage a skilled team, a passion for terrifying people and transferrable business skills that are more important.

The sale price is very reasonable and provided on application.
