Owners Chantelle and Craig had previously built their own house, so the task of improving this then-three-year-old home, which they bought in 2022, didn’t faze them at all.

“We’d been looking for a long time and it was essentially a blank canvas. We knew that it would be perfect for our young family with a few careful changes,” says Chantelle.

Those changes included making better use of the mezzanine floor in the garage by installing steps and railings to make it more accessible.

The couple also added a lean-to extension to the right side of the dwelling, taking special care to ensure it was in keeping with the existing structure.

“We did a lot of work around the pool area too, and put AstroTurf down for our two sons, two dogs and a cat to run around on. We put a lot of effort into landscaping as well.”

The single level five-bedroom house was designed by Tane Cox whose prize-winning ‘black barn’ concept has proved popular with local homeowners. It is simple, yet ultra-stylish with lots of crisp, cool black and white incorporated throughout the exterior and interior.

Chantelle says that the polished concrete floors are one of her favourite features.

“People think we must have underfloor heating because the concrete retains the sun’s warmth so well. The wood-burning fireplace is mostly just for show because we hardly ever need to use it.”

Scott McElhinney and Simone Simpson, of Barfoot & Thompson, Pukekohe sell a lot of premium property in the Franklin area and believe that 242 Seagrove Road – on its generous 3.35ha site – stands out for a number of reasons.

“It’s set behind secure electric gates and it just offers so much value,” says Simone, adding that in addition to the two-car garaging, the property also comes with two shipping containers, which are perfect for storing garden implements and equipment.

While Chantelle and Craig and their boys have enjoyed the property very much, they’re selling to move closer to family.

“We’ll probably build again and will definitely include many of the aspects we’ve loved most here,” she says.

242 Seagrove Road in Waiau Pa, Franklin, is on the market for sale, heading to auction on April 24.
