For those who love to start the day with a sunrise beach walk and end it with a lakeside stroll, this Takapuna sub-penthouse apartment delivers the ultimate coastal lifestyle – with shops, bars and restaurants also just minutes from the door.
Perfectly positioned between Lake Pupuke and Takapuna Beach on Hurstmere Road – “the golden mile” – it enjoys views across both fresh and salt water, and has access to a heated lap pool and fully equipped on-site gym.
The current owners bought it off the plan 21 years ago. Designed by Leuschke Group, the architecture is timeless. It’s one of just nine residences and now available for sale for the first time.
Passionate about life on the water, they loved having the lake and the beach within easy reach. The apartment also served as an ideal home and lock-and-leave base for the widely travelled couple, who last year chose to move closer to specialised healthcare services.

The vendors’ daughter Kelly clearly recalls when her parents bought the apartment as it was the same year she married. Over the years it’s been a beautiful bolthole not only for her folks but the whole family and a gathering place for special occasions.
The outdoor deck (about 120sqm) – which overlooks the lake – is almost as big as the spacious apartment (190sqm) and easily holds 300 people and a marquee. There’s a big table perfect for long lunches around which the family have enjoyed many celebrations. Northwest-facing and light-filled, it’s a great spot for sundowners on the balcony or lakeside, while the dining room has views out to Tiritiri Matangi Island.
“It’s a really beautiful apartment that’s warm, light and happy. It’s full of good energy and it always seems to be sunny. It’s just a beautiful vibe and the water factor was so important to my family,” says Kelly.
“You’ve got the lake on one side and the beach on the other and because you’re encapsulated by water on both sides it’s wonderfully peaceful. But you do have the energy out the front door with the restaurants being a five-minute walk down the road. I don’t know why we’re selling it actually. Dad just loved being by the water and his walks around town.”

This particular apartment at 258 Hurstmere Road also has drive-in access.
“You can quite literally drive straight into the garage and walk into the apartment which is all on one level,” she says.
“It’s terrific for privacy. However, there is also a great sense of community that you can dip in and out of – such as Christmas drinks by the pool and get-togethers. Which also made it a great lock-and-leave when they travelled.”

The carpeted double garage also has handy built-in shelving. The master bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and a generous ensuite including a bath; the hallway powder room is another nod to the generous proportions of the apartment itself.
“It’s a beautiful blank canvas for whoever wants to imprint their new journey on it,” says Kelly.

“It’s light, warm and multi-generational. My parents loved it. I would love to live there. I don’t think you could find any person of any age bracket that wouldn’t want to live there. It’s a young person’s home and an old person’s home. And because it’s all on one level and everything is big and wide, it’s really accessible.”
The lake is accessible, too, making it simple to launch a paddleboard or kayak. There’s also direct access to a pontoon. Kelly’s children would regularly head down to the water in search of eels.
There’s even a table and chairs by the water – an idyllic setting for an evening glass or bottle of wine as the sun sets.
“What makes this sub-penthouse a home is the ease of access – no lift from the garage, and direct internal entry,” says Pene Milne, of New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty.
“Northwest with almost all-day sun, this is warm, sunny, and has an outdoor living area of epic scale.”
10/258 Hurstmere Road in Takapuna, North Shore, Auckland, is for sale deadline, closing March 26.
