Having decided that it’s time to retire, owners Peter and Rose Coles are preparing to leave a stunning 303ha slice of coastal land just north of Dargaville – where they have farmed together for decades.

Peter in particular will notice a big lifestyle change as he has lived on the family farm for more than 70 years.

“It used to be a sheep and beef farm but eventually it was converted to cattle. Rose and I bought it ourselves in 1981 and have run it as a beef finishing block in recent times,” he says.

The farm has been a great place to bring up their two sons.

“Both have got married here. And it turned out to be such a perfect venue, with stunning coastal views,” says Rose.

The house itself is a very functional and comfortable family home. Constructed in the mid-1950s, various alterations have been made over the years.

“It was built in the traditional style with a separate lounge at the front, so we changed things at the rear to achieve more modern, open-plan living when that became the trend,” Rose explains.

“It has a games room, which was great for our boys, plus an office.”

They say that their sons are naturally sad to see the end of this important era, and the grandchildren will miss fun on the farm, and the direct beach access.

“It’s sad for us but this is an exciting opportunity for somebody because there are so many ways that a new owner could use the land,” says Peter.

“It could be another farmer, or maybe an investor wanting to put a manager on. We think it would be great for farm stays, which are very popular with visitors exploring the Kauri Coast highway and Kai Iwi Lakes nearby.”

“Plus, we’ve already proved that it’s a fantastic wedding venue,” adds Rose.

Todd Skudder, from Bayleys, says that the Coles family farm is one of the best he’s marketed during many years in rural real estate.

“You’ve got breathtaking views towards Maunganui Bluff that are hard to beat, and easy access to Ripiro Beach.”

He says that Peter and Rose have put a great deal of effort into creating a farm where wetlands and forestry work seamlessly together.

“They have invested in the best of everything including well-maintained cattle yards, a hay shed, implement shed, solid water system, and fencing.”

With 106 paddocks and 188 cells, plus excellent soil, Todd says this is a tidy, efficient grazing system that’s built to work hard for its new owner.

792 Omamari Road in Dargaville, Kaipara, is for sale by auction to be held on November 26.
