Having bought their secluded Saint Heliers residence in mid-2020, Marti Amos, his wife Kelly and their two sons Zak and Ashton spent Auckland lockdowns during the latter part of that year at home, in what feels like a peaceful private resort, with towering palm trees, natives, and lush, green, sub-tropical plants plus a pool – accompanied throughout the day by melodious native birdsong.
“It was the most wonderful place to be, with space for the boys – and our Rottweiler Rocky, to run around and play. With the home office, which is combined with a bedroom, working was easy,” says Marti, whose business coaching company The Professional Builder operates worldwide.
If the weather was less than perfect the family had plenty of space to spread out inside where a large open-plan living zone incorporates the Shane George-designed gourmet kitchen, dining area and huge lounge.
Also on the ground level is another bedroom plus a separate laundry, a full bathroom and powder room.

An internal-access double garage is big enough to accommodate recreational water sports equipment as well as vehicles.
Marti and Kelly have found the split-level property an ideal home for entertaining – sometimes on a considerable scale, with substantial outdoor living areas including a huge deck beyond the kitchen and lounge for dining alfresco or cooking on the barbecue – plus another on the opposite side of the house where the heated infinity pool gives swimmers the sense that they are floating above the trees.

A third deck runs alongside a self-contained studio with bathroom which is situated on the lower floor and is suitable for extended family or for guests, with its own entrance. Alternatively, it could be utilised as a media room or gym.
Upstairs on the top floor is Marti and Kelly’s private sanctuary in the form of an enormous main bedroom, generous walk-in wardrobe, an ensuite bathroom and masses of storage.
The previous owner updated all three bathrooms to a high standard and apart from updating the exterior cedar cladding Marti says he and Kelly haven’t needed to do very much at all.
Justa Bain, of Barfoot & Thompson, says that the property enjoys what she describes as “Bali vibes” and represents a rare chance for the right buyer to install themselves before summer arrives, with local beaches, St Heliers bustling village centre, sports facilities and popular Madill’s Farm Recreational Reserve all very easily accessed – along with well-regarded local schools.

“It’s a unique home in a fantastic place.”
Marti and Kelly are sad to be leaving after five very happy years, but a move is necessary right now, in order to be closer to their sons’ schools.
Marti says it’s very unlikely their new home will have quite as many appealing features, which also include a pond, complete with waterfall and dedicated yoga space. “This really is a very special property.”
2/59 Tarawera Terrace in St Heliers, Auckland, is on the market for sale by auction on September 17.
