Take one talented architect and an expert builder – combine their skills and imagination, and the result is a highly thoughtful and considered home with an exceptional level of detail and craftsmanship, situated in an increasingly popular neighbourhood, with leafy surroundings and easy access to transport links, shops and amenities.
“When we bought here, in 2013, my husband James and I had no idea we would end up staying so long, but what we’ve done has been a true labour of love – we have created our own sanctuary and we have been so lucky to raise our family in this environment,” says Maria Hosking.
She says that they expanded on the existing character of the small blue weatherboard 1960s home that stood on the generous 612sqm section, adding a seamlessly connected 65sqm extension, gutting the original house and repurposing the two existing utility buildings as workshop and studio spaces that open up to the now established garden.
Maria’s design features a rear bedroom wing with three bedrooms including the master suite, with walk-through wardrobe and light-filled ensuite, while the remodelled original home comprises the architectural kitchen (with scullery/laundry adjacent), living and dining – and also the family bathroom.

She says that energy considerations always underpin her work and accordingly, a generous glazed hallway allows light to flood in – warming up the concrete flooring and offering access to the sunny courtyard and garden – through large double-glazed timber sliding doors, which allow passive ventilation when open in summer.
The sunny north-eastern courtyard is central to the design, linking the private and public wings of the house and connecting the front and back yards – making the property feel all the more generous.
“All of the spaces borrow from the courtyard in terms of outlook, connection to nature and natural light, it’s a beautiful home to inhabit at all times of the day and in all seasons.”

Keeping to a simple colour palette and taking cues from nature, the couple have utilised a variety of natural materials throughout the house.
Rich, warm walnut features in the kitchen cabinet fronts paired with sleek and timeless stainless steel.
Other special features include the concrete and stone fire pit area that bookends the site and catches the last of the sun and various built-in cabinetry – bookshelves, desks and the walnut sideboard and upholstered daybed in the dining area.
These contribute to the overall functionality and cohesive aesthetic of the home.
