Long regarded as one of Castor Bay’s most recognisable homes, 25 Castor Bay Road has a colourful past, quite literally.
Once owned by the well-known Baker/Monk family, the property was famously painted bright pink. Legend has it that pilots used the landmark to line up their planes when approaching Auckland Airport from the north.
Built in the 1970s, the mid-century style dwelling was much loved for many decades and when it came to market the home for the first time, in 2022, Maree Gray, of Harcourts Milford, had invited the whole neighbourhood to attend, so wasn’t surprised to have 10 registered bidders on auction day.
Unfortunately, the home’s condition had deteriorated over time, and it was clear to new owners, Candy and Brian that renovation or refurbishment simply wasn’t going to be feasible.

Having lived for years on the neighbouring rear property, the couple had already envisioned a new future for No 25. After securing the site, they commissioned Verdant Horizon Homes to design a contemporary executive residence tailored to the section’s outstanding position.
That vision was nothing short of spectacular: a 500sqm multi-level home crafted to fully embrace the panoramic harbour-to-headland views, spanning Rangitoto to the Waitakere Ranges.
The concept includes five bedrooms (two with ensuites), a family bathroom, expansive open-plan living, and resort-style landscaping complete with a swimming pool.
Their plans, however, were later put on pause. With their daughters attending school in Remuera, a demanding three-hour round trip each day, the family ultimately relocated to a rental in Orakei.

“It just became too difficult, and the girls have settled in so well with their new friends,” Candy explains. “So, we’ve made the tough decision to let go of this very special property and the vision we had for it.”
While it’s still in the early stages with no plans or consents yet, Candy and Brian are happy to share the design for their dream home with potential buyers.
Leaving Castor Bay has been bittersweet for the family, who remain fond of their friendly community. “Our neighbours are lovely, and we know everyone from the shopkeepers, café staff, takeaway owners, even the supermarket team. They’ve all watched our girls grow up,” says Candy.
She says the family still returns regularly to shop at Milford Mall and enjoy a coffee at neighbourhood favourite Good Hood or a swim at Castor Bay Beach.

“Once the girls are adults, Brian and I would like to come back here to live again. It is so quiet and peaceful with lots of wide, open spaces.”
Maree Gray, who is marketing the property, says that the prospect of replacing the current home with something so spectacular is very exciting for the right buyer and the whole neighbourhood in general.
