Summers by the pool, evenings in the spa and space for everyone to spread out. This character weatherboard villa in Remuera’s double grammar zone comes with all the modern comforts.

It’s been the perfect family home for owners Angie and Simon Pengelly who have raised three kids here. Now as they all fly the coop, the couple are looking to downsize.

That was the case of the home’s previous owners too. “They’d raised three kids like us and were moving on for the same reasons,” says Angie.

To date the home, which was built in the early 1900s, has had just three owners. “When the previous owners bought the property there were still stables out the back. They transformed it into the beautiful home that it is today,” says Angie.

Character features which have been retained include a number of stained glass windows which bring beautiful light effects into the home. Pressed tin ceilings also add to the character.

The original front veranda – a lovely morning coffee spot – has views of Mt Hobson and the adjacent front lawn is big enough to kick a ball around on.

The large kitchen-dining area currently has a 10-seater table, which is great for family dinners and larger gatherings. The backyard pool and outdoor entertainment area is accessed easily from the spacious open-plan lounge, kitchen and dining area which enjoy all-day sun.

“It has that old villa feel but feels clean and new. It’s both open and cosy. It has space, but not too much space that you feel like you’re lost in it,” says Angie.

“It’s great for social gatherings and having people around. There are big spaces for entertaining and then small spaces for cosying up and relaxing. The kids have enjoyed having their friends over and sleepovers, and pool parties. The house can absorb a lot.”

The location has also been amazing for lifestyle and raising a young family.

“It’s been the perfect family home for young kids to grow up in as they’ve been able to play outside and you can keep an eye on them from the kitchen. And for them also to be able to walk to school is a game changer. Remuera Village (a two-minute walk) has everything you need including some great restaurants and New World is just down the road.”

The home’s four bedrooms run off the main corridor and each have built-in wardrobes. The master bedroom has a built-in wardrobe as well as a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite.

From the corridor you step down into a light-filled atrium and open-plan living area which encompasses the kitchen, dining, lounge plus office and laundry. Another small set of stairs leads to a media room and wine cellar.

The property is also private and self-contained with electric gate entry and street front bordered by a green hedge, making it safe and secure for young children and pets.

“We love that it’s so green yet still in town. You can sit outside in the morning with a cup of coffee and be with the animals and enjoy the birds and trees,” says Angie.

There’s also oodles of storage with space in the roof of the double garage, which also has shelving; storage under the stairs; and a concreted space under the house for things like camping gear and Christmas decorations. And enough space to stack wood for two winters to stoke the open fire in the main living area.

The family are sad to be saying goodbye but hope another family will enjoy it as much as they have.

“Not only is this wonderful family home just moments from the Remuera Village with its boutiques, cafes, restaurants – it’s also a one-minute walk from Remuera Primary School, and not much further to Kings School around the corner on Remuera Road. Talk about convenience!” says Steve Koerber, of Bayleys.
