Where architecture becomes legacy

Some properties are owned. Few become part of a city's story. Standing proudly in Kensington, this iconic Art Deco residence, designed by renowned New Zealand architect Terrance Vautier, has been held by only two custodians throughout its almost nine-decade history and is woven into the fabric of Whangārei itself. Known and admired by generations, 70 Kamo Road presents an exceptionally rare opportunity to become the third custodian of a truly significant local landmark.

Private viewings are available strictly by appointment. We encourage interested parties to watch the property video to fully appreciate the scale, history and significance of this remarkable offering.

Occupying a sun-drenched 1,012sqm site (more or less) with approximately 50 metres of road frontage, the property's commanding presence is immediately evident. Yet beyond its striking façade lies a surprising sense of privacy. Established gardens, fruiting trees and sheltered outdoor spaces create an atmosphere that feels worlds away from the city surrounding it.

Built during an era when craftsmanship was paramount and quality uncompromised, the residence showcases many of the architectural features that make Art Deco homes so enduringly admired. A grand entrance foyer welcomes you inside. A sweeping staircase rises beneath a striking double-height etched-glass window, complemented by a polished mahogany handrail, African sycamore paneling and original walnut veneer doors, showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship synonymous with the Art Deco period. Curved walls, ornate detailing, reeded glass accents, soaring ceilings and a private balcony all contribute to a home of exceptional character and distinction.

The formal living spaces are equally impressive. Expansive windows frame views stretching from Mt Parihaka through to the Western Hills, drawing natural light throughout the day and capturing spectacular evening sunsets. Solid native mataī flooring, generous proportions and a chrome-accented gas fireplace further enhance the warmth and elegance of the home.

Complementing the main residence is a substantial annexe, offering additional accommodation options, extensive storage, a bathroom, laundry facilities and garaging, alongside a covered carport. The property allows for generous off-street parking for approximately nine vehicles across two vehicle accesses.

Throughout its lifetime, this landmark property has adapted to changing times. While always residentially zoned, it has been home to several celebrated ventures over the decades, most notably the award-winning fine dining establishment à Deco. These chapters have only strengthened its place in Whangārei's collective memory, with many locals holding fond connections to the building and its story.

Opportunities to acquire a property of this calibre, scale and significance are exceptionally rare. As this iconic landmark prepares to welcome only its third custodian in almost nine decades, discerning purchasers are encouraged to secure a private viewing and experience firsthand the history, craftsmanship and enduring presence of one of Whangārei's most significant residential landmarks.
