There is a lot of property for sale right now, but which listing suits you best? OneRoof’s Buyers' Club series brings you the best in New Zealand real estate, from affordable starter homes to luxury mansions. We’ll highlight a range of homes from around the country that are worth your attention.
The award-winning team at Fearon Hay has designed some of the country’s most extraordinary buildings. Started by Tim Hay and Jeff Fearon in 1998, the Auckland-based studio is a key player in Aotearoa’s contemporary architecture scene and is a master of capturing the essence of the landscapes their designs sit within.
Along with super cool hospitality and commercial spaces, they have designed many inspired residential homes utilising their signature style, symmetry and simplicity.
These four Fearon Hay homes have been created to exist within their unique settings as well as highlight those very same settings.

1 Albany Road, Herne Bay, Auckland | Price on application
A Fearon Hay surprise sets this sculptural concrete Herne Bay home apart from the rest of the suburb. Previous owners include rich-lister property developer Ben Cook and fashion importer Roger Wall, brother of luxury real estate agent Graham Wall, whose sons Ollie and Andrew have the listing.
Their uncle Roger’s contribution to the original – which was built by New Zealand concretologist and Grand Designs star Ross Bannan - was to commission Fearon Hay to turn the then untouched heritage-protected brick stables on the back of the property into a studio. The current owners then added a steel kitchen by IMO to make a self-contained apartment.

The brothers see lots of great pads in the course of their work, but both told OneRoof that 1 Albany Road was their dream house.
“You’re in this ultra-modern house full of light and minimalist to the extreme,” Ollie said.
“Then you’ve got this beautiful kind of European-feeling courtyard in between that and the original horse stables. Fearon Hay kept all the charm and everything beautiful about it but put in this glass and steel and marble bathroom.”

It’s the spectacular Southern Alps that inspired the concept for this Arrowtown masterpiece. Elongated forms, a Fearon Hay signature, with floor-to-ceiling glazing maximise panoramic views across the Wakatipu Basin to Coronet Peak, the Remarkables ski fields and surrounding mountain ranges, with The Hills Golf Course in the foreground.
Buyers will be able to accommodate friends and family for ski and golfing holidays with ease, thanks to the four private, well-separated bedroom suites. No one misses out on the vistas as every principal room has been positioned to maximise natural light and the outlook.

Ray White agent Sarah Mare says her vendors are moving on from this statement Arrowtown home. Photo / Supplied
Ray White listing agent Sarah Mare is selling the property and says the previous owners commissioned Fearon Hay to create the home and says the views are “stunning.”
Despite showing a fair few Kiwis around so far, she’s expecting the buyer to be international, likely an Aussie, utilising the new Golden Visa.
The property last changed hands for $2.55m more than 10 years ago, but Mare's vendors are moving on, so there's an opportunity for a "savvy buyer".

75 Greenside Road, Medlands Beach, Great Barrier Island | Price $3.5m
Storm Cottage - a special getaway overlooking Oruawharo Bay on Great Barrier Island - was designed by Tim Hay and Jeff Feron as a Hay family holiday home. Keeping it in the family, the nurturing interior palette was curated by interior architect Penny Hay, sister of Tim.
Bayleys agent John Greenwood, who is selling the two-bedroom bach, says the architectural pedigree speaks for itself here.

“The Fearon Hay connection tells you everything you need to know, in terms of the design, comfort levels and where it is,” he shares.
“It’s just on the southern end of Medlands Beach, which is the best location on the Barrier.”
The elongated, horizonal box faces north and overlooks the bay, with the deep exterior colour palette chosen to harmonise with the manuka and kanuka trees that cover the hills behind.
“The view is just stunning. The property gets all of the sun and it’s got a beautiful, dead flat front lawn for playing on or pitching tents. It’s paradise, it really is.”

82 Delamore Drive, Oneroa, Waiheke Island | Price on application
It’s out to Waiheke for Fearon Hay’s "Island Retreat". The James Bond-style sanctuary is made up of a collection of three freestanding structures around an open courtyard, set in a saddle above Matiatia Bay.
It’s another Wall listing, and in their OneRoof ad, Andrew and Graham say: “Nestled amongst native bush with sunset views over Matiatia Bay down the Hauraki Gulf to Rangitoto and Auckland City. Complete seclusion, moments from the ferry.”

Another island creation by Fearon Hay, but this one has a higher price tag. The property's RV is $9.95m. Photo / Supplied
The architecture draws from the principles of a camp - sans the ablutions block and hazardous guy ropes - with separate tent-like structures designed as living, sleeping and studio spaces. The five-bedroom house can even operate off grid, with rainwater harvesting, wastewater treatment, and solar energy generation all provided on site.
