- Three West Coast families bought the Cromwell home originally pitched to Mike Hosking.
- It sold for $2.1m after a $450,000 price drop and restrictions on buyers.
- The families will use the property as a car showroom, continuing to house collectible cars.
Hard luck, Mike Hosking. Three West Coast families have ended up buying the multimillion-dollar Cromwell home that was pitched to the Newstalk ZB host last year.

Racing enthusiast Mark Guyton hit the headlines in September 2024 when he told OneRoof he wanted Hosking to buy his four-bedroom trophy home overlooking Highlands Motorsport Park, in Cromwell.
“Mike Hosking loves cars. He has some very nice cars and he likes Highlands Motorsport Park as well. He would be a very good contender to buy the house,” he said.

Hosking gamely discussed the house - and Guyton’s smart racing car collection, displayed in the upstairs lounge - on his breakfast show the next day, but ultimately, it wasn’t for him.
The home on Monaco Drive was a hard sell, even after a $450,000 price drop. Only members of the racing track were able to buy, with potential purchasers hit with a $15,000 joining fee and annual subs of close to $5000.

Tall Poppy listing agent Keeley Anderson told OneRoof she managed to strike a deal for the property with three families from the West Coast. “They all chipped in for joint ownership. They’re really cool people,” she said, adding that they would continue to house collectible cars at the property.
“They’ll use it as a car showroom effectively.”
The home was initially listed at offers over $2.7m but eventually sold for $2.1m, a figure Guyton was happy with. “It’s the right people. And that meant as much to me as the money.” He also sold the buyers his beloved replica Lap of the Gods car, modelled on one driven by V8 Supercar star Greg Murphy. “I did that separately from the house sale,” he said, adding that he would miss the car.

Guyton and his wife Joan have bought a larger property in the area and will split the car collection between their new home and their house in Christchurch. “We’ll just get that finished and keep a few cars there and bring quite a few cars back to Christchurch and enjoy them at home.”
The Cromwell home originally parked eight cars when they bought the property. But additional works, including the installation of a car-sized lift to the upstairs lounge, extended that to 13.
Guyton also owns a limited-edition Greg Murphy Maloo ute. It is one of just 10 Holden Commodore utes of the same design.

Not all of the Guytons’ cars are high-performance vehicles. A 1967 Fiat Bambina “bubble car” also has pride of place in the upstairs showroom.
The cars aren’t just objects of desire. Guyton makes sure he “turns the wheel” of them all. “The road-legal cars are all warranted and registered so they can go out any old time.”
Guyton said this week that the home was surprisingly quiet when there was no racing. “From four o’clock, it becomes a completely different place. It’s the quietest subdivision you can live in.”
