Accent Group non-executive director Michael Hapgood and his wife Catherine listed 11 Stack Street for sale this week – and it comes with a royal connection.
The five-bedroom, four-bathroom home was one of the 11 houses in Herne Bay bought by the Sultan of Brunei for his royal entourage in the mid-1990s.

The Hapgoods bought 11 Stack Street off of rich-lister businessman Gary Lane, whose $35m purchase of the sultan’s Auckland property portfolio made front page news in 2005.
Bayleys agent Nick Gilbert told OneRoof that his clients had decided to sell Stack Street after buying another property in the suburb. “They bought it as an investment,” he said.
This is the third multimillion-dollar home the Hapgoods have listed this year. In June, the Herald Sun reported that the couple put their luxury Melbourne apartment on the market, and last month, the couple sold their waterfront home in Auckland’s North Shore.

Michael Hapgood has been instrumental in the expansion of Accent Group, whose stores include Hype, Platypus and The Athlete’s Foot and is known for his love of classic cars.
Earlier this year, Michael and Catherine commissioned a top-to-bottom renovation of 11 Stack Street. When they bought it in 2021 for $6.6m, the house needed a makeover. “Gary Lane had different people living in it. It was sort of a transient home, is my understanding,” Gilbert told OneRoof.
He said his clients had completely reconfigured the house. “Basically, there’s been no surface in the interior that hasn’t been changed. They added new structural elements to remove some ugly beams and poles in the middle of the downstairs living area. They improved the flow, added mod cons [including] air conditioning in all bedrooms.

“It’s all been relined and insulated. Basically, everything’s been done without rebuilding the structure.”
Gilbert said the house would appeal to wealthy Kiwi families returning from overseas or a couple with older children.
The buyers also get to live in Herne Bay’s best corner, he said. Over the road, at 15 Cremorne Street, rich-lister property developer Simon Herbert and his wife Paula are selling their revitalised waterfront mansion for more than $50m.
And in neighbouring Sarsfield Street, two well-known but “very private” Kiwis are selling their harbourside pad and a rental next door.

Gilbert said there were some famous names in and around Stack Street, including Rodd & Gunn owner Mike Beagley, Crombie-Lockwood co-founder Stephen Lockwood, “who’s investing tens of millions of dollars into a new Fearon Hay build”, and the Les Mills family.
Gilbert confirmed to OneRoof that he had worked with colleague Victoria Bidwell on the sale of the Hapgoods’ Stanley Point Road home. OneRoof reported last month that the award-winning waterfront home, designed by Geoff Richards, had an RV of $11m and previously belonged to one of the world’s most powerful media bosses.
“I sold that one with Victoria. We set a record over there with that property,” Gilbert told OneRoof.
